Mohamed Salah Makes History as He Claims 2025 PFA Player of the Year Crown

Mohamed Salah secured the 2025 PFA Player of the Year honor on Tuesday, making history as the first footballer to claim this prestigious accolade three times.

Salah triumphed over Bruno Fernandes, Alexander Isak, Cole Palmer, Declan Rice, and Liverpool teammate Alexis Mac Allister. The Egyptian forward claims his second award of the decade and ends Manchester City's dominance, breaking their consecutive winning streak held by Phil Foden and Erling Haaland.

Salah delivered exceptional performances throughout last season, topping the Premier League charts with 29 goals and 18 assists while helping secure the league title and reaching the Carabao Cup final. Despite being considered a Ballon d'Or contender, his Champions League and cup competition results may impact those prospects. Nevertheless, this PFA recognition celebrates his outstanding individual displays and team achievements.

Several footballers have claimed this honor twice, with some achieving consecutive victories. Kevin De Bruyne was the most recent to accomplish both feats, earning the award from 2019–2021 during his Manchester City tenure. Previously, Cristiano Ronaldo achieved back-to-back wins from 2006–2008 while at Manchester United.

Although Salah's victories weren't consecutive, he stands alone as the only player to capture three PFA Player of the Year awards. This achievement surpasses the accomplishments of De Bruyne, Ronaldo, Thierry Henry, Mark Hughes, and Gareth Bale.

Salah initially claimed the award in 2017–18, followed by his second triumph in 2021–22. From 2012–13 onwards, Liverpool players have dominated with five victories, overtaking Manchester City's four awards during their period of excellence. Overall, since the award's inception in 1974, Liverpool players have captured the PFA Player of the Year title on 10 occasions.

This victory also represents Salah's first time winning the individual award alongside a Premier League championship. When Liverpool previously won the title, De Bruyne received the Player of the Year recognition.
