Mourinho Docuseries Reignites Old Controversies as His Real Madrid Return Looms

Real Madrid icon Iker Casillas has described his dynamic with José Mourinho as "very cold" in a new docuseries about the manager that illuminates the bitter conclusion to his first tenure at the Santiago Bernabéu.

Mourinho, who was reappointed to helm Madrid this summer, originally took charge of the club from 2010 to 2013.

The two-time Champions League champion was widely regarded as arguably the finest manager on the planet when he arrived in the Spanish capital, riding high on European glory with Inter Milan.

While he secured a Copa del Rey and a La Liga title—the latter achieved with a record-breaking points haul—Mourinho failed to end Madrid's lengthy drought in Europe and departed after three years, following a fruitless and disappointing final campaign. His closing months were defined by off-pitch turbulence as an increasingly irritable Mourinho clashed with the press, opponents, and even members of his own squad.

Infamous Casillas Rift Re-Visited

Club captain Casillas was among those who fell out of favour with Mourinho as the situation deteriorated. The goalkeeper—one of the club's most revered figures—found himself dropped and sidelined by the manager during the 2012–13 season, a decision that stunned many observers.

"The relationship José and I had was very cold," Casillas recalls in the new Netflix docuseries Mourinho. "During those years, I genuinely believe things were pushed to a breaking point where, ultimately, the rope snapped."

Elsewhere in the series, former midfielder Sami Khedira—who rejoined Real Madrid this summer as part of Mourinho's coaching staff—acknowledged that the falling-out between Casillas and the manager had a damaging effect on the squad.

He said: "Iker is a Real Madrid legend, adored by every Real Madrid fan. He benched him, stopped talking to him, spoke negatively about him in the media—so the locker room became a nightmare, honestly.

"After that, the relationship between Jose and so many players fell apart—like Cristiano [Ronaldo] and the Spanish players, Casillas, Sergio Ramos. And those players were incredibly, incredibly important for the atmosphere in the dressing room."

Mourinho Claims Madrid Players Were 'Spoilt'

Reflecting on the reasons behind the breakdown in his relationship with Casillas, Mourinho said: "The first three times I spoke to Casillas, the captain, the first thing he told me was, 'I want to request more holiday time for the national team players.'

"The second time he spoke to me was, 'I'd like to ask you to push training sessions back an hour because at the time you want them, there's heavy traffic in Madrid.' The third time he came to speak with me was, 'We don't want to go to the hotel. We'd rather just meet on matchday and head straight to the stadium to play.'

"And within a short space of time, I realized they're spoilt."

Mourinho also addressed how his persistently combative stance toward rivals Barcelona didn't go down well with some of his own players, who were required to mix with those same opponents during international breaks.

The 63-year-old added without apology: "I say, this is Barcelona versus Real Madrid. When you go to the national team, you can embrace the guy—but not now. This is war."

Mourinho's Attitude Ominous for New Season

Notably, the new Netflix series revisiting the old turmoil at Real Madrid arrives just as reports emerge that the current squad is adjusting to Mourinho's "strict new rules" at the club's Valdebebas training facility.

For now at least, it is said that the players are receptive to Mourinho's new fine system encouraging punctuality, along with adjustments to diet and injury rehabilitation protocols.

It was, after all, precisely to restore a sense of discipline and authority over the playing staff that Florentino Pérez turned to Mourinho at the beginning of this summer, in the wake of a turbulent season.

How long the honeymoon period will last remains an open question.
