José Mourinho's recent remarks about trimming his Real Madrid roster have sparked considerable discussion—and likely left a number of his players feeling uneasy.
Speaking following Real Madrid's 2–1 preseason victory over Ferencváros on Saturday, the famously blunt Portuguese tactician made his vision abundantly clear: "We want a small squad."
He went on to say: "I'd say around 20 players, plus those unfortunate enough to be sidelined through injury."
Madrid currently carry 25 players in their registered first-team squad—the maximum permitted under La Liga rules—ranging from established world-class stars to new signings, including Ibrahima Konaté, Bernardo Silva and Yan Diomande, along with promising young talents such as Arda Güler.
All of those names are presumably safe, without doubt. But if Mourinho genuinely intends to cut the squad by around four or five players, there are plenty of others who may now be questioning whether their future remains at the Santiago Bernabéu.
So, who exactly might be at risk?

First, there are several peripheral players who could find themselves in a precarious position simply because they are not regular starters—and an oversized squad in Mourinho's view only compounds that problem.
The club has invested heavily in the transfer market this summer, with the possibility of further additions, meaning some players could quickly become expendable. For those on the periphery, that could translate into a transfer, reduced opportunities or even being omitted from matchday squads entirely.
One name to keep an eye on is Raúl Asencio. The Spaniard has dropped further down the centre-back hierarchy following Ibrahima Konaté's arrival and may struggle to earn consistent playing time.
Meanwhile, Castilla prospects such as David Jiménez, César Palacios and Manuel Ángel could be dispatched on loan to accumulate valuable senior experience.
As for the big names who could genuinely depart? There are a few—and once again, it has more to do with an abundance of talent in specific positions than any shortage of quality.
Madrid are particularly well-stocked in two areas: central midfield and the wide attacking roles.
In midfield, Federico Valverde and Jude Bellingham are essentially untouchable. That leaves Eduardo Camavinga as the most exposed.

The other congested area is out wide. The signing of Yan Diomande, Vinícius Júnior pledging his future to Madrid with a contract extension, and the continued presence of Brahim Díaz and Arda Güler have left Rodrygo Goes facing serious questions about where his future lies.
The Brazilian has been linked with a departure for some time, having never quite managed to cement his role despite frequently delivering in crucial moments. Now, with an ACL injury ruling him out until 2027, the door is wide open for Diomande to stake his claim on the right flank.
Rodrygo is unlikely to be sold in the immediate term, but January could emerge as a possibility, with next summer perhaps the more realistic window. His contract runs until 2028, giving Madrid essentially a year before the prospect of losing a valuable asset for nothing becomes a genuine concern.
