Napoli Break Silence on Scott McTominay's Condition Following Heart Procedure

Scott McTominay successfully underwent a cardiac procedure on Tuesday, with Napoli confirming in an official club statement that the operation was "a complete success."

The Scottish international traveled back to Manchester to receive pulsed field ablation (PFA) treatment, following a diagnosis of a benign arrhythmia earlier this month.

The procedure was not considered major surgery and is minimally invasive, utilizing advanced medical technology that uses electrical pulses to target malfunctioning heart cells. The goal is to correct irregular, excessively fast, or abnormally slow heartbeats.

McTominay, who last featured in Napoli's Serie A loss to Como on Aug. 30, had been expected to return to action following the upcoming international break, and that timeline still appears to be on track now that his treatment is complete and recovery is underway.

McTominay Told to Rest

Napoli have indicated McTominay will need "two weeks" of rest before he can resume training.

Having already missed the thrilling 3–2 defeat to defending Serie A champions and title contenders Inter Milan last weekend, McTominay will also be absent for upcoming fixtures against Arsenal, Bologna, and Fiorentina.

He is set to return to training in the final week of September, once club football pauses for the season's first international break. A Scotland call-up appears unlikely under the circumstances, with McTominay expected to remain in Italy to focus on rebuilding his fitness.

Following a revision to FIFA's fixture calendar, the traditional September and October international windows have been combined into a single, extended break. Nearly three weeks separate Napoli's last match before the break (Fiorentina, Sept. 20) and their first match after it (Frosinone, Oct. 10).

McTominay, who featured in every minute of Scotland's 2026 World Cup qualifying campaign, will miss his nation's four scheduled matches against Slovenia, Switzerland, North Macedonia, and Slovenia once more as UEFA Nations League B gets underway.

Napoli Need McTominay Fully Healthy

McTominay is now in his third season with Napoli, having made the move from his boyhood club Manchester United in 2024. He was awarded the Serie A Footballer of the Year honor in his debut season, netting the title-clinching goal as Napoli edged out Inter for the championship.

His move to Italy has transformed McTominay, a player who was often harshly criticized in England. Even a relative dip in form during 2025–26 still yielded 10 Serie A goals, while 14 across all competitions made it the most productive campaign of the influential midfielder's career.

He had yet to open his scoring account when his minor heart condition was detected this season, but McTominay will be a key figure if Napoli are to recover from a difficult start that has seen the side, now managed by six-time scudetto winner Massimiliano Allegri, lose two of their opening three league games.
