Patrick Dorgu Faces Extended Man Utd Sideline After Injury Blow—Report

Patrick Dorgu Faces Extended Man Utd Sideline After Injury Blow—Report

Manchester United may face up to 10 weeks without Patrick Dorgu following medical examinations that have reportedly shown a more severe injury than initially anticipated.

Dorgu found the net for consecutive matches when United defeated Premier League table-toppers Arsenal 3–2 on Sunday, highlighting his growing significance to the squad under Michael Carrick's guidance.

However, he was substituted shortly before Matheus Cunha's remarkable match-winning strike, with the new caretaker manager initially hoping it was merely "a touch of cramp."

The manager commented after the match at the Emirates Stadium, "Hopefully it's nothing too serious."

Regrettably for Carrick and United, Dorgu has sustained a more substantial injury.

The Athletic reports that medical tests have confirmed a hamstring strain, and although evaluations are ongoing with no definitive timeline established, preliminary estimates suggest a 10-week recovery period.

Should this projection prove accurate, Dorgu might not feature again until early April, potentially missing United's upcoming eight fixtures—over half of their remaining 15 matches. He would also be unavailable for Denmark's vital 2026 World Cup qualification playoff matches in March.

Why Patrick Dorgu Is Important for Man Utd

Why Patrick Dorgu Is Important for Man Utd

Dorgu arrived from Lecce last January, ostensibly to provide Ruben Amorim with personnel better suited to his 3-4-2-1 formation. However, his capability to operate in advanced positions as a winger, rather than as a wing-back or full-back, has become evident since United reverted to a 4-2-3-1 setup.

He struggled when Darren Fletcher deployed him as a traditional left-back in the FA Cup loss to Brighton & Hove Albion. However, the Scottish manager positioned the Danish player on the left flank against Burnley, with Luke Shaw providing support behind, and he contributed an assist in that draw.

After netting spectacular strikes in back-to-back victories over Manchester City and Arsenal, Dorgu has been directly involved in a goal in each of his previous three Premier League outings when playing as a winger.

The 21-year-old had also scored in the sole match where Amorim briefly abandoned the 3-4-2-1 system and utilized him in that attacking position—during the victory against Newcastle United on Boxing Day.

"Pat has been crucial for us, not just with his two goals but in terms of the danger and pace and skill he brings, he's been outstanding down that flank alongside Luke [Shaw] against two sides that pose serious challenges," Carrick remarked following the Arsenal triumph.

This makes the setback particularly difficult to absorb, as United lack a natural replacement for that position. Bryan Mbeumo, who has been operating centrally, is more comfortable on the right wing than the left, as is Amad Diallo. Matheus Cunha and Mason Mount could deputize in the role, but neither provides the same natural width that has been essential to Carrick's tactical approach and would tend to cut inside.
