Pedro Neto Sidelined: The Real Reason Behind Chelsea Star's Absence Against Newcastle

Pedro Neto has become the poster child for Chelsea's ongoing disciplinary problems throughout this campaign.

Valid concerns have been raised regarding Chelsea following nine dismissals in all competitions this season—with seven occurring in Premier League matches—and neither Enzo Maresca nor his replacement Liam Rosenior have managed to address this escalating problem.

Neto became the most recent Chelsea player to receive a red card after accumulating two yellow cards during the 2–1 loss against Arsenal earlier this month, with the Portuguese winger having already missed the recent 4–1 triumph over Aston Villa while serving his suspension.

Nevertheless, despite originally receiving a single-match suspension for his dismissal at the Emirates Stadium, it has now been revealed that Neto will be absent once more for Saturday's crucial Premier League clash against Newcastle United.

On Friday, the Football Association (FA) announced that Neto had received an additional one-match ban following his red card against Arsenal. This extension stems from misconduct after his dismissal and has also led to a £70,000 ($93,000) financial penalty for the player.

According to The Athletic, Neto's additional punishment results from conducting himself in an "improper manner" after his red card, with the winger either failing to exit the pitch promptly and/or directing offensive language toward match officials. Neto has acknowledged the charge brought against him.

Consequently, the 26-year-old will be missing from Chelsea's squad for Newcastle's visit to Stamford Bridge, limiting Rosenior's offensive choices ahead of this important match. The Blues are fighting for Champions League qualification and understand that a top-five placement will likely secure it, with victory against the Magpies potentially lifting them to third position before rivals Manchester United, Aston Villa and Liverpool play on Sunday.

Neto may also face consequences for another moment of poor judgment during Wednesday's 5–2 Champions League loss to Paris Saint-Germain in the first leg of the round of 16. UEFA has launched an inquiry into an incident where Neto shoved a ball boy at the Parc des Princes, representing another example of rash behavior that could result in a European ban.

Neto's unavailability arrives at a challenging period for Chelsea. Estêvão will continue to be sidelined as the Blues adopt a careful approach to his injury recovery, though Jamie Gittens has returned to availability following his own fitness struggles.
