Pep Guardiola Admits Costly Blunder That Could Gift Arsenal the Premier League Crown
Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola exposed himself to the criticism he believed he "earned" for failing to include Rayan Cherki in the starting lineup during Saturday evening's 1–1 stalemate against West Ham United.
Before traveling to London, Guardiola had cautioned his team that dropping points would mean the Premier League title battle with Arsenal "will be finished." City gained a somewhat lucky advantage at London Stadium via Bernardo Silva's deflected cross before allowing the sole shot West Ham would manage across the full 90 minutes.
City accumulated 24 attempts, compelling Mads Hermansen to make five stops, but found it difficult to create genuine scoring chances against a resolute defensive wall. Antoine Semenyo particularly appeared to struggle while playing in an unfamiliar central attacking midfield position instead of the striker partnership he has frequently occupied.
Guardiola was questioned whether Cherki would have been better suited for this creative role, particularly since he would have been rested after missing the midweek Champions League defeat to Real Madrid.
"You are correct, yes. Completely. For that position, completely. There is nobody superior to him," the Spanish manager honestly admitted. When pressed about why Cherki remained on the substitutes' bench, only entering for the closing thirty minutes, Guardiola willingly accepted responsibility.
"Poor choice," he admitted, "now you can condemn me severely, for the lineup, now I have earned it."
Guardiola Faces a Week of Vulnerability
Guardiola Faces a Week of Vulnerability

Manchester City's 3–1 victory over Newcastle United in the FA Cup fifth round was highlighted by Guardiola as a demonstration of his perfect contemporary vision of football. Players were returning smoothly from injuries, a fresh tactical approach appeared to be functioning perfectly and the quadruple ambitions remained very much realistic. Seven days later, City now confronts significant challenges in both the Champions League and Premier League.
Guardiola faced widespread criticism for his team selection in the 3–0 defeat at the Bernabéu. According to the former Barcelona manager's own acknowledgment, his exceptionally attacking 4-2-4 formation was intended to overwhelm this aging Real Madrid squad. It was largely effective for the opening 20 minutes. Then Fede Valverde found the net, recalling the classic Mike Tyson saying: "Everyone has a strategy until they receive a punch in the face."
City's vulnerability was revealed in the Spanish capital and Guardiola shifted to the opposite approach, fearing another setback against West Ham.
"It's occasionally for the equilibrium," Guardiola explained regarding his decision to bypass Cherki, a player who can unlock any defense with the kind of ambitious passes that can sometimes fail and create counter-attacking opportunities for opponents.

"We discovered early [in the campaign] that when we deployed Erling [Haaland] at that time with Jérémy [Doku] or Cherki that we become extremely unbalanced, we lack the steadiness that Premier League teams must possess and that is why I attempt to manage it accordingly.
"It's a squad that is developing, I believe that from the start we've improved significantly but it remains unfinished work. It happens like that sometimes but I will not claim that I don't enjoy playing with Rayan, particularly when he enters from the bench, always the influence is remarkable.
"But occasionally he lacks the pace. The team maintains stability when Semenyo and Nico O'Reilly operate in the wide positions and drift inward, reach the penalty area, they are truly, truly effective. I'm still discovering the optimal way to achieve stability and consistency in the squad."
Guardiola must make correct selection decisions if he wants to provide City any opportunity of sustaining their championship pursuit. Though that may already be unattainable in the opinion of some of his players.
Rodri Makes Unexpected Premier League Title Statement
Rodri Makes Unexpected Premier League Title Statement

Rodri's notable criticism of Arsenal's flawed championship-chasing approach from the 2023–24 season has gained considerable attention lately. However, the Manchester City midfielder didn't demonstrate unwavering confidence after falling nine points behind the Gunners during the weekend, acknowledging that the "gap is too significant."
"Perhaps yes, perhaps no," Rodri responded when questioned by TNT Sports whether the title contest was concluded. "We're not going to surrender, we're going to continue battling. We understand it's going to be challenging because we possess this knowledge of what's required to succeed ultimately. I believe the gap is too significant but we're going to fight until the conclusion.
"Now is a time of no remorse.
"Today we demonstrated a bit of what the season represented, highs and lows, then perhaps the final pass or the final shot can determine the outcome. Football is about scoring and we couldn't locate the players to deliver numbers in terms of goals. That's the most crucial aspect in football because we generated the opportunities, we dominated the matches but this is what creates the difference."
