Pep Guardiola and Man City Stars Clash Over Premier League Title Hunt as Manager Warns They Must 'Smell Blood'

Although Pep Guardiola cautioned that Sunday's Carabao Cup victory against Arsenal might only bring negative consequences, Manchester City's hero Nico O'Reilly declared that he and his squad can now "sense opportunity" in the Premier League championship battle.

City survived Arsenal's initial pressure at Wembley Stadium before outmaneuvering their league opponents in the second half. Guardiola himself was surprised by how perfectly his tactical approach worked, joking afterward that he wouldn't have wagered £1 on the 2–0 victory.

While praising the display enthusiastically, City's boss remained doubtful about how this specific result would influence the continuing championship fight with Arsenal. "I wish we had nine points ahead of Arsenal," Guardiola confessed, even wondering if he would "trade" the trophy for that advantage which the Gunners presently possess.

"It will make no difference," he maintained, "separate tournaments."

If anything, Guardiola was cautious about Arsenal's potential reaction to this disappointment. "They will be more motivated when they visit the Etihad," he forecast, referring to the crucial league encounter between the teams in Manchester on April 19.

Guardiola strangely suggested that this cup success would benefit his team against Liverpool in the FA Cup quarterfinals—perhaps because both are knockout tournaments allows the momentum to carry over—but several of his players showed greater optimism about their Premier League prospects.

O'Reilly was questioned by CBS Sports studio whether he and his colleagues could now sense opportunity in the pursuit of the Premier League title. "Absolutely, 100%," the improvised left-back responded immediately. "The hunger never disappeared—we've always sensed it. We believe in ourselves, we know our capabilities, they must visit our ground which is a difficult venue as everyone has witnessed this season. So we do sense opportunity and must continue forward.

"It means everything to us [winning the final], creates momentum and we push ahead now. Obviously it's a major setback for them. They were pursuing everything, just like we were [before losing to Real Madrid in the Champions League]."

Rodri expressed similar optimism when considering the broader consequences of Sunday's triumph. "Enormously, enormously," was his assessment of the match's significance. "That's why I believe it's a contest not just for this trophy [Carabao Cup] but to demonstrate we can defeat them.

"There remains much work ahead," Rodri recognized, "and clearly we didn't want Champions League elimination, but we're out and must find the positives, we have additional time to prepare for matches. That's worth considering—but we must also celebrate this achievement.

"The Real Madrid match was extremely difficult [losing 5–1 overall] but the squad has bounced back. We understood it was a crucial game against Arsenal not just for the trophy but because we faced the league's top team.

"Now we must rest, return for the next international break and come back with confidence that we still have two competitions remaining to compete for."

Mikel Arteta Vows to Harness 'Fire in the Belly'

Arsenal's nine-point advantage depends on viewpoint. City retain a match in hand and could reduce the deficit to merely three points if they defeat the Gunners again at the Etihad this spring. Mikel Arteta, nevertheless, wasn't prepared to surrender more than one championship on Sunday.

"We'll channel this frustration and this burning desire to create the most incredible two months we've ever experienced together," he promised in his post-match media session, projecting intense determination rather than openly defiant motivation.

"That responsibility lies with us and we'll direct that energy appropriately. Now we must process that hurt and frustration and it's natural and part of the game."

Arsenal haven't faced much hurt and frustration; Sunday's loss was only their fourth defeat in all competitions this campaign. Following each previous setback, the Gunners have not only resumed winning but assembled double-digit unbeaten streaks. They'll require a similar surge of positive results to overcome the ghosts of a particularly humbling afternoon at Wembley.
