Phil Foden Seals Exciting New Man City Deal and Sends Bold Message to Enzo Maresca

Phil Foden says Manchester City's players are thrilled to be working again with new head coach Enzo Maresca, following the England star's decision to sign a fresh long-term deal at the Etihad Stadium.

Maresca, who previously managed City's academy setup, served as Pep Guardiola's number two throughout the 2022–23 campaign before stepping out on his own as a head coach. He was selected as City's ideal successor to Guardiola, who left the club at the conclusion of last season.

As he put his signature on a new deal tying him to City through to 2030, Foden spoke candidly about the lasting impression Maresca made during his single season with the first team.

"I'm really looking forward to working with Enzo again," Foden admitted. "He was outstanding during the Treble season—someone every player had enormous respect for and genuinely enjoyed working alongside.

"Having him back at the club is something to be really excited about."

It was during Maresca's stint as assistant that Foden made a notable leap in his goal contributions, and that momentum carried through into the 2023–24 season, where 19 goals and eight assists earned him the Premier League Player of the Season award.

Matching those heights has proven difficult for Foden in the seasons since, leading to questions over his long-term future and considerable rumours surrounding a potential summer departure from the club he grew up supporting. For Foden, though, leaving was never a consideration.

"Pledging my future to City means the world to me," he said via the club's official channels. "Pulling on this shirt is all I've ever dreamed of, and it never stops being an honor. I'm well aware of how fortunate I've been to be part of such a remarkable era with so many trophies lifted, but we're always focused on what's ahead and hungry to win more.

"I can only thank the Club, staff, teammates and supporters who continue to believe in me and trust that I give absolutely everything for City. I hope to repay that faith for many years to come."

Director of football Hugo Viana commented: "Everyone here at Manchester City is immensely proud of Phil. He embodies everything that is great about our Academy. He is an exceptional talent, and watching his creativity on the pitch is a genuine pleasure.

"But none of his achievements would have been possible without the discipline, dedication and humility to work tirelessly in every moment and soak up the knowledge offered by our coaches and fellow players.

"Given that Phil first joined City at just nine years old, his continued success is something celebrated throughout every part of our club — from the academy staff who nurtured his development to the City supporters who have stood behind him every step of the way.

"At 25, he is still very much developing as a player, and we're excited to see just how far Phil can go in the years ahead."
