Phil Foden Unveils the Game-Changing Secret That Sparked His Stunning Comeback

Manchester City's Phil Foden has revealed that rediscovering his "joy" on the pitch has been the key to the 25-year-old's impressive comeback this campaign.

The midfielder claimed all three of England's most prestigious individual honors in 2023–24—the FWA Footballer of the Year, PFA Players' Player of the Year, and Premier League Player of the Season—following outstanding displays that yielded 40 goals and assists in all competitions.

However, following that stellar campaign, he struggled significantly at Euro 2024 with England, even though the Three Lions reached the final. Foden transitioned from his finest season to what could be considered his most challenging in 2024–25, later revealing he was managing "numerous personal matters affecting him mentally off the field". An ankle ligament problem sustained near the end of 2023–24 also contributed to his difficulties.

The playmaker has regained his rhythm in the opening months of 2025–26, with this week's Champions League double in City's commanding 4–1 victory over Borussia Dortmund marking a pivotal breakthrough.

Foden: 'I'm Enjoying Every Moment'

Phil Foden celebrated by Man City teammates.

"I'm enjoying every moment," Foden told TNT Sports after the match. "I simply need to approach the game with happiness, which I'm currently doing. The previous year was challenging, not only for me but for the entire team. There's a renewed unity this season and it's evident.

"You gain valuable experience when you navigate difficult periods. We have excellent leaders in our squad and we discuss ways to return to our best form. We've also brought in outstanding new players who have introduced fresh determination and solidarity.

"It's about striving to become the team we once were, and this season we're witnessing signs of that return."

Pep Guardiola announced to the media: "Phil has returned!"

The City manager expressed regret that Foden's peak performance was "absent" last season. "I believe he will contribute significantly to our success. When Phil is content, appreciated, and finds pleasure in his game, there's little more to add. He possesses exceptional talent. However, we require his goalscoring ability, and hopefully this marks the beginning of that contribution."
