Phil Parkinson has expressed his gratitude to Wrexham fans for their tremendous support following his team's crucial 2–1 victory against Southampton in the Championship.
Keven Schlotterbeck netted an unfortunate own goal in the dying moments of the game as the Red Dragons recovered from their humiliating 6–0 thrashing by West Ham to claim a thrilling victory over Southampton.
Parkinson had faced renewed scrutiny as Wrexham's manager heading into the fixture, with a number of critics questioning his position following the worst defeat of his tenure at the Racecourse Ground. Nevertheless, the three-time promotion winner has maintained the backing of the majority of supporters, who made their loyalty abundantly clear before the Southampton clash.
As the Wrexham boss stepped onto the pitch prior to kickoff, fans greeted him with loud chants of his name, while waves of vocal support rang out around the Racecourse Ground for the duration of the match.
Parkinson Blown Away by Wrexham Support
Speaking following his team's three-point haul, Parkinson expressed his appreciation to the fans for standing firmly behind the club after such a demoralising result in their previous outing.
"First and foremost, I want to thank our supporters," Parkinson said at his post-match press conference. "The way they rallied behind the team today was absolutely brilliant. The reception they gave me as I walked across the pitch before kick-off truly meant a great deal.
"Our supporters have endured difficult periods, and they know how to bounce back. They played a huge part today; I thought they were absolutely incredible. There was a real atmosphere inside the ground, and that is what football is all about. The club, the supporters, the staff, the owners, the players — everyone is connected. You could really feel that today."
When asked whether the backing felt more significant than usual, the manager responded: "It meant so much because it has been a tough week for us and our supporters too, as we have a lot of pride and we've demonstrated that over many years.
"Once we moved past Friday's defeat, the focus shifted to what we were going to do next: in training, how we'd prepare the team, and how the players would respond. The staff and players have united, and I am incredibly proud of that."
Wrexham will not return to action until Oct. 10 when they face Derby County, with the international break affording Parkinson valuable time to build further on the team's momentum.
