Phil Parkinson has claimed that Swansea City defender Ben Cabango deserved a red card for what he described as a potentially "leg-breaking" challenge on Wrexham forward Callum O'Hare during their 0-0 stalemate over the weekend.
The Welsh derby ended all square in a heated encounter in South Wales, with Wrexham feeling they were the more deserving side by the end of the contest. The Red Dragons effectively neutralized the Championship leaders' attack and created a handful of promising opportunities to snatch a winner in the second half.
Wrexham's chances could have improved significantly had Cabango been dismissed for his reckless challenge on O'Hare, which would have left Swansea playing the final 13 minutes a man short. The Swansea centre-back lunged in aggressively, failed to connect with the ball, and brought his opponent crashing down.
Despite the severity of the challenge, referee Elliot Bell opted for just a yellow card, a call that left Parkinson furious — particularly given that the same official had sent off Wrexham defender Callum Doyle for a comparable foul during their victory against Oxford United the previous season.
Parkinson Furious With Cabango Tackle
Addressing reporters in his post-match press conference following the draw with Swansea, the Wrexham boss vented his frustration over the official's handling of a pivotal moment in the game.
"Looking back at the match, they should have been reduced to 10 men," Parkinson said. "Before that tackle, Ben Cabango grabbed Kieffer around the neck on the halfway line. That alone warranted a yellow card, and then came the challenge. The same referee sent Callum Doyle off against Oxford for a tackle where he was perhaps slightly out of control.
"I'd be very keen to ask the referee how he distinguishes between those two incidents. Every season, managers are made to sit and listen to referees explain what constitutes a red card — and when a player is as out of control as Ben Cabango was, putting an opponent in danger, that is a straight red. On top of that, he should have already been on a yellow.
"I thought the referee managed the atmosphere reasonably well, but when it came to the crucial call, he got it wrong.
"We want to keep our players safe, and when someone comes in at that kind of pace, it could easily have broken his leg. Callum had an ice pack on his leg afterwards, and we're hoping he'll be alright."
