Phil Parkinson Slams the Door Shut on Wrexham's Inevitable Summer Transfer Exit

Manager Phil Parkinson has made clear that Wrexham have no intention of offloading key attacker Josh Windass in the upcoming summer transfer window.

The 32-year-old claimed the club's Player of the Season award after an impressive campaign in which he netted 17 goals and contributed six assists across all competitions since joining from Sheffield Wednesday last summer.

Windass had emerged as a transfer target for Scottish powerhouse Rangers, now led by his former Sheffield Wednesday boss Danny Röhl. The creative midfielder was brought in on a free transfer after his previous deal was mutually cancelled, meaning any potential sale would be entirely profitable from a financial standpoint.

Sports Illustrated reported earlier this week that there was "nothing to report" on the swirling transfer speculation, a stance echoed by Parkinson. With Windass contracted through June 2028, the North Wales outfit faces no urgency to part ways with him — or any other member of the squad.

The Red Dragons achieved the finest finish in the club's 162-year history, wrapping up the season in seventh place in the Championship standings — just two points outside the playoff spots.

Parkinson has openly acknowledged the need to "improve" the squad this summer in their pursuit of Premier League promotion, with a number of significant signings anticipated once the transfer window gets underway.

Wrexham's promotion push will depend not only on new arrivals but also on holding onto their key players. In addition to the interest in Windass, standout defender Callum Doyle has drawn considerable attention after a stellar personal season that earned him a place in the Championship Team of the Season.

Yet as far as Parkinson is concerned, neither player will be leaving the club.

"Josh is our player, he had a good season, and we are looking forward to him building on that next year," he told The Leader. "We are looking to add to the quality we have got, not lose it. I think we would be disappointed if there wasn't some interest in our players.

"It is inevitable, but we have got the key players we want on long contracts, and we are in a good position on that front. We are looking to build on what we did last year and improve the squad to make us really competitive again."

Could Wrexham Still Sell a Star?

Wrexham has been unequivocal about not wanting to sell any key players this summer, though there remains an understanding that every footballer has a price. With no financial strain forcing their hand, Wrexham remain a club driven by ambition and firmly focused on reaching the Premier League next season.

Club insiders indicate that Wrexham's revenue for their debut Championship season will come in at approximately $65 million, a figure set to be confirmed when financial results are published next year. If that estimate holds, the club would have around $55.25 million to allocate toward player costs — covering transfer fees, wages, and agent commissions — under the new Squad Cost Ratio (SCR) financial regulations.

That said, an extraordinary offer could prompt serious reconsideration. Wrexham signed Windass for nothing, and his resale value is limited at 32, meaning a sizeable fee could give the club pause. Similarly, while there is no desire to move Doyle on, a major bid could force a tough call. In football, nothing can ever be completely ruled out.
