Phil Parkinson Sounds the Alarm: 'Time Is Running Out' for Crucial Wrexham Transfers

Phil Parkinson has acknowledged that Wrexham are finding it "proving difficult" to strengthen their squad before the summer transfer window shuts.

The Red Dragons have brought in three players so far this summer, but are hoping to secure at least two more before the window shuts on Tuesday, September 1. Wrexham have been linked with a number of players over the course of the summer, and Parkinson revealed that certain potential transfers came "very close" to being finalized before ultimately collapsing.

Sports Illustrated understands that Wrexham chief executive Michael Williamson has been spearheading the club's transfer business this summer, ahead of Steve Nickson's arrival as the club's first-ever sporting director. Nickson is set to officially take up his position on Sept. 2, the day following the closure of the transfer window.

With time running short, Wrexham are believed to be in the market for a center back and a forward before deadline day, though Parkinson concedes it has proven harder than anticipated to push those deals through.

Speaking at his pre-match press conference on Friday afternoon ahead of Wrexham's home fixture against Watford, Parkinson was quizzed about the club's transfer dealings as the deadline rapidly approaches.

"It's proving difficult, I have to say, it really is," the Wrexham boss admitted. "We are trying, but we've got a decent squad. I'm not saying we won't succeed, but the clock is ticking. It's just not easy for various situations.

"Like I've been saying throughout the summer, I want to make sure our focus remains on the players we already have here. We've got a good squad. We'll need those injured players back to fitness, and we'll see where things stand next week."

When pushed on what he was still looking to bring in before the window closes, Parkinson said: "I don't really want to discuss specific positions. I've said throughout that ideally we'd like a couple more players through the door. We've got very close to a couple of those deals and for one or two reasons they've fallen through. But that's just part of the ups and downs of the transfer window.

"Of course, like everyone else, we'd welcome a few more additions. If we get them, brilliant, but if we don't, there are players who haven't featured in the opening couple of games who are keen to prove they can make their mark at this club."
