Philadelphia Union Seize 2025 MLS Supporters' Shield, Lock in Commanding Playoff Edge

The Philadelphia Union concluded the 2025 Supporters' Shield competition on Saturday evening, claiming the MLS regular season championship with a 1–0 victory against New York City FC at Subaru Park.

Mikael Uhre netted the decisive goal for the Union in the 40th minute, while Jamaica national team goalkeeper Andre Blake made two crucial saves to preserve the shutout and secure the triumph, elevating Philadelphia to 66 points with two games left to play.

Although other MLS clubs, including Lionel Messi's Inter Miami and Thomas Müller's Vancouver Whitecaps FC mounted a late challenge due to matches in hand, the Union only required a victory to clinch the title on Saturday following the other teams' point losses the previous week.

By finishing atop the MLS regular season standings, the Union have secured home field advantage throughout the entire 2025 MLS Cup playoffs, hosting the opening match and a possible third game of the first round best-of-three format, plus every subsequent round they advance to.

Simultaneously, they earned qualification for the 2026 Concacaf Champions Cup, joining nine other MLS clubs that will compete for continental honors.

This season represents the Union's second Supporters' Shield triumph, having previously claimed the award during the pandemic-affected 2020 campaign. However, this marked their first opportunity to lift the genuine trophy, as 2020 saw them celebrate with a makeshift replica crafted from a Captain America shield toy due to shipping complications.

The 2025 MLS Cup playoffs commence October 22 with Wild Card fixtures, and the Union will start their postseason campaign in the opening round versus the Eastern Conference Wild Card victor on the October 24 weekend.

The Union have yet to capture an MLS Cup, with their most recent championship game appearance occurring in 2022 when they lost to Gareth Bale and Carlos Vela's LAFC.
