Philadelphia Union Seize Supporters' Shield Destiny with Dominant Victory Over D.C. United
The Philadelphia Union will hold their fate in their own hands as they approach the season's final two matches, following a commanding 6–0 victory over D.C. United on Saturday evening at Audi Field.
Just fourteen days after suffering a devastating 7–0 defeat to Vancouver Whitecaps FC, the Supporters' Shield frontrunners delivered an impressive display of their own, largely restoring their goal difference while expanding their advantage at the summit of both the MLS standings and Eastern Conference table to five points.
The triumph also places them in command of the Supporters' Shield competition as MLS approaches its concluding phase, receiving assistance from both Inter Miami and Vancouver dropping valuable points in their respective stalemates against Toronto FC and Seattle Sounders FC.
"I remember how it felt a few weeks back [losing 7–0], and we won't get carried away or overanalyze this result. The players delivered an outstanding performance this evening," stated head coach Bradley Carnell, who deployed his 27th different starting formation of the 2025 regular campaign.
"At this moment, my focus isn't even on the outcome. It's not about the three points, and it's not influenced by other results. It's about the condition and well-being of the squad, which comes first and foremost, but I'm extremely proud of the players for the excellent week we've had."
Top scorer Tai Baribo was unavailable due to suspension. Nevertheless, his absence posed no problems for the Union, as the attacking trio of Mikael Uhre, Milan Iloski, and Bruno Damiani each contributed a goal while midfielder Indiana Vassilev found the net twice for his fourth career double.
Uhre, though, wasn't included in the initial starting eleven, but entered the contest in the 13th minute as a substitute for USMNT midfielder Quinn Sullivan, whose participation was shortened due to injury.
Additionally, goalkeeper Andre Blake recorded four saves in his consecutive clean sheet following his return from injury, taking over starting responsibilities from young Andrew Rick, with the 19-year-old having struggled against some of the league's top-tier clubs.
The win represented the Union's largest victory margin of 2025, and also made the club the first team in league history to net at least five goals away from home against the same opponent on three separate regular-season occasions.
Milan Iloski Hits High Gear
Securing offensive contributions from throughout the roster is what stands out most as they head into the final fixtures against New York City FC and Charlotte FC, with squad depth frequently proving crucial for extended MLS Cup Playoff campaigns. Specifically, witnessing Iloski reach 12 goals this season and rediscover the form he displayed with San Diego FC earlier in the campaign represents a vital development.
"Milan has simply stepped in and filled a void quite remarkably. He produced solid goal contributions at San Diego FC, and I believe he's just adapted seamlessly to a system like ours, which he genuinely embraces," Carnell continued.
"He appreciates the connection with his teammates, and I felt some of the excellent intricate passing, whether during build-up play or transitional moments, was quite entertaining to observe."
With Iloski and others finding their rhythm, the Union control their remaining fixtures and likely need only to withstand pressure from FC Cincinnati, as they pursue the club's second Supporters' Shield before targeting their inaugural MLS Cup championship.
