Pochettino Breaks Silence on MLS's Game-Changing Revolution

Mauricio Pochettino has characterized Major League Soccer's (MLS) choice to synchronize its schedule with the world's premier leagues as a "significant advancement."

On Thursday, MLS ownership unanimously approved a calendar restructuring that will take effect beginning with the 2027–28 campaign. Shortly after the modification was officially announced, the U.S. men's national team head coach expressed his views on the move.

"Certainly, this represents a significant advancement for MLS to match the elite leagues globally," Pochettino stated (via MLS). "The capability to synchronize with the international schedule will create tremendous positive effects for players, coaching staff and organizations.

"This impact reaches beyond senior national squads, as it will provide us access to youth national team athletes during crucial international tournament periods, further enhancing their progression."

Pochettino Applauds MLS Calendar Restructuring

During comments before the USMNT's exhibition against Paraguay, Pochettino was prompted once more to express his views regarding the MLS schedule modification. On this occasion, the Argentine coach offered even greater praise in his remarks.

"My response is: excellent work," Pochettino stated. "Congratulations, outstanding, I believe it's a brilliant choice. What we can contribute from my perspective and the [U.S. soccer] federation is to demonstrate our backing. It's an excellent choice.

"I believe this will benefit MLS, benefit American soccer and I support the decision. I'm pleased because, whether I'm here or not, I think it's a positive move for the sport.

"The atmosphere will feel like we're competing in the U.S. similar to Europe, which serves as our benchmark. We're undergoing development and growth. The optimal method to advance in this sport is to observe the top leagues [worldwide], their operations and methodologies."

Previous USMNT head coach Gregg Berhalter and Stars and Stripes icon Clint Dempsey also commended MLS for the revolutionary adjustment, with Dempsey noting: "Having MLS synchronized with the global schedule is excellent.

"Whether you're playing in MLS, Europe, or elsewhere, this alignment ensures players are more prepared during national team gatherings and makes it simpler for everyone—athletes, coaches, and supporters—to track the sport throughout the year.
