Pochettino Drops Bombshell Promise About Premier League Future After USMNT Appointment

United States men's national team head coach Mauricio Pochettino has reaffirmed his ambition to return to Premier League coaching and emphasized that he remains "still young" enough to capture England's top division title and the Champions League trophy.

Pochettino has been open about his love for English football—where he maintains his residence despite accepting the USMNT role in September 2024. The ex-Tottenham Hotspur and Chelsea manager inked a two-year deal with the national team, though substantial buyout clauses make it unlikely to be terminated before this summer's World Cup.

The United States will serve as co-hosts and have received a fairly favorable group draw. Pochettino has already guided his team to wins over their two confirmed group stage rivals—Australia and Paraguay—and should feel optimistic about facing the qualifier from UEFA's pathway C, which may include Türkiye, Romania, Slovakia or Kosovo.

However, England's premier competition remains prominent in Pochettino's thoughts.

"The Premier League stands as the world's finest," he shared with BBC Sport in an interview published the day following the World Cup draw. "Naturally I long for it. I'm content in the United States, but I constantly consider returning someday. It represents the most challenging league, and certainly I would welcome the opportunity to return."

Pochettino Targeting Silverware Upon Premier League Return

Mauricio Pochettino, his coaching staff and Harry Kane.

Pochettino seeks more than just a return to England—he aims to complete his unfinished business. Following his impressive work with an aggressive pressing approach at Southampton, the former center-back dedicated five years to Tottenham. Pochettino consistently achieved top-five finishes with Spurs and guided the north London club to runner-up status in 2016–17.

Tottenham also advanced to the 2019 Champions League final during Pochettino's tenure, suffering a disappointing 2–0 defeat to Liverpool in the title match.

When the BBC asked about one major career goal he still hopes to fulfill, Pochettino responded immediately: "To capture the Premier League and the Champions League."

"We came incredibly close at Tottenham," he reflected. "I desire to accomplish this. I remain youthful, I possess the drive, knowledge and determination to pursue this in the future."

Securing the World Cup—the objective established by his current organization—curiously went unmentioned by the USMNT coach.
