Pochettino Rallies Behind Rising USMNT Talent Following Heated Paraguay Clash
Orlando City defender Alex Freeman found himself at the heart of a confrontation that ignited a major altercation near the conclusion of the U.S. men's national team exhibition against Paraguay. However, Mauricio Pochettino expressed complete satisfaction with how his young defender managed the incident.
Freeman and Paraguay's Gustavo Gómez engaged in a struggle for possession following a referee's whistle, and with emotions escalating, their scuffle developed into a full-scale fracas featuring exchanges of punches. The USMNT ultimately secured a 2–1 victory, but for Pochettino, Freeman's response demonstrated his commitment to protecting his teammates.
"We all feel tremendous pride in how we conducted ourselves," Pochettino stated before the USMNT's upcoming clash with Uruguay. "Alex performed well because he was protecting and fighting for possession since the official awarded the ball to the U.S. This demonstrates character and genuine commitment, I was truly pleased when this occurred.
"I believe when hostility comes from the opposition, we must stand our ground. This was an excellent opportunity to declare, 'We take pride in our feelings and our identity.' Certainly it carries risks, and I hope such incidents don't repeat. However, if others show aggression toward us, we will protect ourselves. This remains the crucial point."
Alex Freeman Reflects on Paraguay Altercation

Freeman displayed the "determination, courage and tenacity" Pochettino seeks to develop within his USMNT squad. The promising fullback shared his perspective on the confrontation he initiated last Saturday evening.
"It's beneficial that we experienced this before the World Cup," Freeman explained to The Athletic. "Having that competitive edge and discovering our true nature. We fear nothing as a U.S. squad. If this was previously an issue, it certainly isn't anymore."
The USMNT will face Uruguay in an exhibition to conclude 2025. For Freeman, this represents another crucial examination where the Stars and Stripes must maintain their aggressive approach.
"I believe it's another physical contest we must navigate while demonstrating our character," Freeman explained. "Ultimately, this is what Pochettino expects from us.
"To display our personality consistently throughout matches and prove we're always competitive."
