Pochettino Raves About USMNT Star's Brilliance as Team Shows Fighting Spirit in Ecuador Stalemate
Should supporters choose to critique the display from the U.S. men's national squad, which demonstrated passion and determination on Friday evening during their 1–1 tie with Ecuador at Austin FC's Q2 Stadium, Mauricio Pochettino has no objections whatsoever.
In contrast to much of his inaugural season leading the USMNT, the discussion following the stalemate with the 17th-ranked South American nation centered not on the intensity from those donning the stars and stripes, but rather on the quality of play.
"We find ourselves discussing tactics, strategies, formations and similar topics," Pochettino shared with media after the match. "Following one year, I'm delighted that we're not addressing other matters like dedication, mindset—elements we previously discussed. I believe that represents significant progress."
Enner Valencia put Ecuador ahead in the 24th minute, but the USMNT managed to restore parity when Malik Tillman assisted Folarin Balogun for the leveling strike in the 71st minute.
Beyond being just a goal, it came from two athletes who should be considered among the USMNT's finest. This proves vital if the Americans aim to have their most gifted players performing at peak level for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, which they will co-host with Canada and Mexico.
For Balogun, this achievement also placed him among just two players to make their USMNT debut in 1995 or afterward with a goal contribution in 11 of their initial 17 starting appearances.
Though AC Milan star Christian Pulisic featured for only 17 minutes due to a minor ankle problem, and Fulham left-back Antonee Robinson missed his expected comeback, the USMNT displayed determination and spirit across the full 90 minutes.
Nevertheless, AS Monaco's Balogun rose to the occasion when required, along with other standout contributors, including Juventus' Weston McKennie, Atlético Madrid's Tanner Tessman and Middlesbrough's Aidan Morris, who were all making their return following periods away from national team duty.
"The display was an extremely serious showing, very professional," Pochettino continued, before highlighting Balogun's contribution. "His dedication is incredible, both in and out of possession, I'm thoroughly satisfied with his showing."
Pochettino Provides Injury Updates

Though Pulisic managed to feature briefly in the contest, he continues dealing with a minor ankle concern. Meanwhile, Robinson sustained an injury earlier this week and was unavailable for selection.
Both players, however, remain possibilities for Tuesday's fixture at Dick's Sporting Goods Park in Commerce City, Colorado, when the USMNT take on Australia, who defeated Canada 1–0 on Friday evening.
The most significant injury concern within the squad involves forward Alex Zendejas, who was sidelined due to a knee problem and will return to Club América in Liga MX to continue his rehabilitation.
"He's dealing with a minor issue in his knee — the posterior area of his knee. It's not a major concern, but he won't be available," Pochettino explained regarding Zendejas, before providing an update on Robinson. "We'll assess tomorrow whether he can participate in training [before the next fixture]. Today, he wasn't ready."
