Mauricio Pochettino has officially signed a new deal to manage the U.S. men's national team through the 2030 World Cup, and this "new chapter" will also see the Argentine coach's influence extend across the entire U.S. Soccer organization.
Pochettino's future had been a subject of speculation for months. In the lead-up to this summer's World Cup co-hosted by the United States, the former Tottenham Hotspur, Paris Saint-Germain and Chelsea boss openly entertained the idea of returning to club management. Talks even took place with Serie A club AC Milan on the eve of the competition.
However, following a run to the round of 16 — which concluded with a sobering loss to Belgium but was marked by several strong performances along the way — Pochettino has committed his future to the national team for another four years. Most notably, his responsibilities will stretch well beyond the senior squad alone.
A federation statement confirmed that "he [Pochettino] and the coaching staff will also advise and support U.S. Soccer on the broader development of the full national team pathway, youth soccer, coaching education, professional league collaboration and other technical facets across the soccer community."
The USMNT entered the tournament ranked 17th in the world, meaning a round of 16 exit was a realistic outcome. Coaching the established senior squad can only elevate the team to a certain level. Now, Pochettino has been granted the scope to raise the bar for future generations.
"We are thrilled by the chance to bring all of our experience and knowledge to even more areas of U.S. Soccer while helping strengthen the pathways for players, coaches and teams across the federation," Pochettino said in response to the announcement.
U.S. Soccer CEO and secretary general JT Batson added: "Mauricio and his staff believe in the future of soccer in the United States and our new project allows us to build on the progress of the USMNT and the momentum of U.S. Soccer.
"We know we have a lot of work ahead to achieve our clear ambitions, including competing to win men's World Cups and making soccer the most widely played sport in every community. I couldn't be more thrilled that Mauricio and his team are committed to partnering with all of us to put in the hard work needed to turn those ambitions into reality."
Pochettino Explains Why He Turned Down Club Return for USMNT Project
Pochettino had made little secret of his desire to return to club soccer, openly stating his intention to take another crack at success in the Premier League and Champions League. Yet the 54-year-old appears to have been won over by the reception he and his staff received on home soil this summer.
"Working together with U.S. Soccer over the past two years, it has become clear to us that there is tremendous potential to make the men's national team program even stronger," Pochettino explained. "The passion we experienced from the fans throughout the World Cup only deepened our belief in what is possible here."

The atmosphere surrounding U.S. matches at this summer's tournament was a complete turnaround from the indifference that had characterized the early stages of Pochettino's tenure. This surge in fan enthusiasm was repeatedly highlighted by the passionate and deeply principled head coach throughout the competition as a tremendous source of pride.
"We want to try to leave a lasting impact on the sport in the country that has welcomed us so warmly, and for that impact to reach beyond results on the pitch," Pochettino concluded.
