Pochettino's Bold Tactical Gamble Sparks USMNT's Most Dominant Display Against Uruguay
The United States men's national soccer team enters 2026 with tremendous momentum following their commanding 5–1 victory over Uruguay at Raymond James Stadium in Tampa, Florida.
Marcelo Bielsa's Uruguayan squad served as an excellent measuring stick given their exceptional talent level. However, it was the USMNT who controlled proceedings throughout the evening. A significantly rotated lineup appeared well-organized and expertly coached against the two-time World Cup champions. Their defensive structure in midfield disrupted Uruguay's possession game, making it challenging for them to penetrate through central areas.
Sebastian Berhalter, Alex Freeman and Diego Luna all found the back of the net during a devastating first-half display. The USMNT demonstrated their capabilities in counter-attacks, ball retention and dead-ball situations. A squad without Christian Pulisic, Chris Richards, Weston McKennie, Tim Weah and other key players looked dominant throughout.
An outstanding display and ideal conclusion given they won't compete again until March. Despite all the challenges and setbacks this team has faced in 2025, they appear completely revitalized under Pochettino's guidance.

USMNT Player Ratings vs. Uruguay (3-4-3)

*Ratings Provided by FotMob
GK: Matt Freese—6.5: Poor defensive coordination cost the USMNT a shutout in the opening period, leading to De Arrascaeta's spectacular strike. Though his starting position likely remains secure, Pochettino will expect Freese to display greater composure and confidence going forward.
CB: Alex Freeman—9.0: The Orlando City standout represents one of the most compelling narratives of the Pochettino tenure. His two-goal performance in an adjusted position has virtually guaranteed his place for 2026.
CB: Mark McKenzie (c)—6.8: Led the USMNT as captain. McKenzie distributed accurately from deep positions but will be disappointed with the defensive breakdown on Uruguay's solitary goal.
CB: Auston Trusty—7.6: Trusty performed admirably replacing Tim Ream. Considering the competition for defensive spots, the Celtic defender might have an outside chance of making the squad next year.
RM: Sergiño Dest—7.6: Another encouraging display from the PSV fullback. Dest is undoubtedly a starter when healthy and could be even more effective if Freeman operates behind him in a hybrid capacity.
CM: Aidan Morris—7.3: Faced a challenging task against Uruguay's skilled midfield unit. Maintained tempo by completing more passes than any other player on the pitch.
CM: Sebastian Berhalter—8.6: Has Berhalter earned his way onto the 2026 World Cup squad? While he may not be a regular starter, his work rate and set-piece expertise could make him valuable next summer.
LM: John Tolkin—7.3: The 23-year-old performed well replacing Max Arfsten, covering ground effectively along the left touchline. A viable depth choice should injuries occur.
RW: Timothy Tillman—6.8: Appeared hesitant with the ball at times but worked diligently and contributed to two goals during the match. His involvement for 2026 remains uncertain.
ST: Haji Wright—6.3: Subdued and occasionally out of sync despite the USMNT's offensive dominance.
LW: Diego Luna—7.9: Netted the team's fourth goal and remained a constant threat in the final third. One of his finest showings in a USMNT jersey.

USMNT 5–1 Uruguay—How it Unfolded at Raymond James Stadium

Pochettino implemented nine alterations to the lineup that beat Paraguay on Saturday. A bold decision considering supporters hoped to see him maintain a strong formation to finish the year. Freeman, following his involvement in a bench-clearing altercation, started at right center-back with Dest positioned ahead of him.
Both traditional wing-backs were active early, making overlapping runs while displaying their technical ability. Uruguay frequently attempted to cut off wide passes by sending two defenders to close down distribution channels. The USMNT's most threatening moment of the initial period occurred in the 15th minute after Wright earned a free kick just outside the penalty box.
The USMNT capitalized on their chance with a spectacular strike from Berhalter. The Vancouver Whitecaps midfielder played it short to Dest before receiving it back and curling in a magnificent effort. Reminiscent of Toni Kroos's 2018 heroics against Sweden in the World Cup.
Moments later, Berhalter switched to creator with a precise corner as Freeman headed home at the far post. Completely by design as well. The USMNT consistently targeted crosses to the back post and were rewarded for their tactical preparation.
Freeman completed his brace in the 30th minute. Relentless pressure from Tillman and Trusty in advanced positions forced a turnover in the attacking third as Freeman maneuvered around the area and fired low to beat Fiermarin. The MLS Young Player of the Year's emphatic display cemented his case for a 2026 roster position.
Luna added a fourth goal just before halftime. A smooth passing combination between Trusty, Tolkin and Tillman generated another excellent opportunity as Luna made a delayed run into the box. A slight deflection helped the Real Salt Lake star as he calmly slotted the ball into the net.
Some defensive chaos provided Uruguay a lifeline as De Arrascaeta scored a spectacular overhead kick in first-half injury time. Despite all the discussion about intensity and commitment entering the match, it was the USMNT who controlled the opening 45 minutes. Pochettino was even the more animated coach heading to the tunnel, frustrated with how his team lost concentration.
Bielsa made several substitutions to begin the second half seeking a catalyst. Pochettino responded with changes at the hour mark, bringing on Gio Reyna, Folarin Balogun and Tanner Tessmann.
Matters deteriorated further for Uruguay in the 65th minute as Bentancur received a red card for a dangerous challenge on Berhalter. The USMNT sensed opportunity and continued pressing for additional goals.
Reyna delivered a perfect cross as Tessmann rose highest to beat Fiermarin. The USMNT managed the game from there to conclude 2025. Pochettino maintained his unbeaten record against CONMEBOL opponents as USMNT manager, improving to 3-1-0.
