Portugal Boss Fires Back at Critics, Calls Ronaldo's Funeral Absence Controversy 'Immense Injustice'

The head of Portugal's Football Federation has defended Cristiano Ronaldo following criticism over his absence from Diogo Jota's memorial service.

The football community united in grief after Jota and his sibling André Silva lost their lives in a devastating vehicle collision a month prior. Current and former teammates honored the brothers at both Anfield and in Gondomar, Portugal, where the memorial ceremony took place.

Bernardo Silva, Rúben Dias, João Félix and Bruno Fernandes were among the Portugal squad members who attended to show their respects at the service. However, Ronaldo's absence was notably conspicuous.

The five-time Ballon d'Or recipient faced criticism for not attending the ceremony, which Pedro Proença deemed "unjust."

"It's tremendously unfair to suggest that Cristiano somehow maintained a distant stance regarding this matter," the Portuguese Football Federation chief stated during a conversation with Tribuna Expresso.

"Right from the start, our captain stood with us and was among those who formed the strongest bonds with our national squad family, as well as with Jota's immediate relatives," Proença added.

Ronaldo allegedly chose not to attend Jota's memorial to avoid drawing focus away from the ceremony.

"And I repeat: the criticism directed at our captain is unjustified," Proença stated. "Cristiano Ronaldo was among those most deeply affected, particularly given his genuine friendship with Jota."

Ronaldo and Jota were teammates for Portugal's national squad, participating in the country's Nations League victories in 2019 and 2025. After the Liverpool striker's death, Ronaldo posted this heartfelt message on social platforms:

"This makes no sense. We were just together with the national team, you had just gotten married," Ronaldo posted. "To your loved ones, your spouse, and your kids, I offer my deepest sympathies and hope they find strength during this time.

"I'm certain you'll always watch over them. Rest peacefully, Diogo and André. You'll be deeply missed by all of us."

Athletes worldwide honored Jota during this summer's FIFA Club World Cup, mimicking his signature gaming celebration and displaying his jersey. Liverpool has permanently retired Jota's No. 20 jersey as a tribute to the cherished player.
