The strike finally broke Neves's scoring drought with his country in his 60th international appearance.

Following celebrations with his fellow players, Neves planted a kiss on the number 21 adorning his jersey front, which previously belonged to his close companion Jota. The former Liverpool forward and his sibling André Silva lost their lives in a devastating vehicle collision in July.

Neves subsequently gestured skyward before lowering his sock to display his commemorative tattoo honoring Jota. This touching gesture occurred during Portugal's initial home fixture following the tragic loss of Jota and Silva.

Neves's dramatic late intervention while sporting Jota's digits delivered a deserved triumph on an emotionally charged evening for Portugal. The home team controlled proceedings against Ireland, though a decisive strike remained elusive throughout regular time.

Cristiano Ronaldo had an opportunity to put his team ahead from the penalty area in the 75th minute, however his 12-yard attempt was denied by ex-Liverpool shot-stopper Caoimhin Kelleher.

Neves, however, ensured Portugal wouldn't settle for a single point on Saturday night. Beyond scoring the decisive goal in the 91st minute, he also registered the highest pass completion rate and tackle count in the contest.

Portugal aims to build on their 1–0 triumph with another three-point haul on Tuesday, Oct. 14. The reigning 2025 UEFA Nations League titleholders are scheduled to face Hungary at the Estádio José Alvalade to conclude the October international break.
