Premier League's Greatest Unbeaten Starts Ever—And How They All Came Crashing Down

Premier League's Greatest Unbeaten Starts Ever—And How They All Came Crashing Down

It's the dream every manager chases. After a summer of pre-season tours and grueling training sessions, they all envision the perfect beginning to competitive football.

The Premier League shows no mercy, and every three points must be fought for. A single win is hard enough, a run of victories is an impressive achievement, and an extended winning streak to open the season is the stuff of dreams.

There's usually a front-runner, and numerous clubs since the league's formation in 1992 have enjoyed sensational starts to the campaign, hinting at a comfortable title charge. Yet history has repeatedly shown that championships aren't decided in August, September or even October.

Here are the eight longest winning streaks to begin a Premier League season throughout the competition's history, and how each of those teams ultimately fared.

8. Man City 2023–24 (Six Wins)

Rodri

Manchester City were riding high heading into the 2023–24 season, with Rodri's goal in Istanbul having sealed a historic treble the year before.

And City's midfield anchor ensured their winning streak extended past two matches at the start of the new campaign, netting late at newly promoted Sheffield United to clinch a 2–1 victory at Bramall Lane.

Pep Guardiola's men then beat Burnley and Newcastle United without conceding, before thrashing Fulham and comfortably seeing off West Ham United — though a Rodri red card made their sixth consecutive win a harder-earned affair.

They were then stunned by Wolverhampton Wanderers in Gameweek 7, and subsequently fell to title rivals Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium the following week. The Gunners mounted another serious title challenge, but City embarked on a remarkable 23-match unbeaten run — including 11 straight wins to close out the season — to claim a fourth-consecutive league crown.

7. Liverpool 2018–19 (Six Wins)

Sadio Mané

This was the season Jürgen Klopp's Liverpool truly announced themselves as a genuine force.

The summer signings of Alisson and Fabinho proved to be game-changers, as the Reds rapidly transformed into serious title contenders following a fourth-place finish in 2017–18.

They set the tone with six consecutive victories to open the season, keeping clean sheets against West Ham United, Crystal Palace and Brighton & Hove Albion. A win at Tottenham Hotspur — when Spurs were still a formidable side — was a real statement, and while their perfect start was ended by Chelsea at Stamford Bridge, the Reds wouldn't suffer a league defeat until Jan. 3.

Ultimately, the 2–1 loss to Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium proved to be the decisive blow, as Klopp's side heartbreakingly missed out on the title despite accumulating a remarkable 97 points.

6. Man City 2016–17 (Six Wins)

Pep Guardiola

Guardiola's reign in Manchester began with six successive Premier League victories, though there was a growing feeling that opponents would eventually work out his methods.

Their winning run featured just one clean sheet despite a relatively kind run of fixtures, and a 2–0 defeat at Spurs felt like an inevitable outcome.

It proved to be a frustrating debut campaign for Guardiola in English football, with his defensively vulnerable City side repeatedly exposed on the break. They dropped as low as fifth in January before recovering to finish third and secure Champions League qualification.

Then came the 'Centurions.'

5. Chelsea 2009–10 (Six Wins)

Michael Ballack

Following a period of managerial instability, Roman Abramovich turned to Carlo Ancelotti, with the Italian embarking on his first venture into English football after amassing an impressive trophy haul in his home country.

Ancelotti largely retained the squad that had come agonizingly close to the Champions League final the previous season, and Chelsea's seasoned group hit the ground running under their new boss.

Didier Drogba's cross-cum-shot secured the Blues' victory on the opening weekend against Hull City, and their six-game winning run was rounded off with a routine dismantling of Spurs at Stamford Bridge.

Back-to-back defeats followed in their next three outings, and they slipped to third after drawing with Blackburn Rovers in March. However, seven wins from their next eight — including a 2–1 triumph at Old Trafford — saw them pip Manchester United to the title by a single point.

4. Newcastle 1994–95 (Six Wins)

Ruel Fox

Kevin Keegan's "Entertainers" had arrived.

Newcastle United's notorious title collapse would come the following season, but their start to 1994–95 offered an early glimpse of what was to come.

The Magpies plundered 22 goals across their opening six wins, keeping just a single clean sheet. Fans were captivated, and the Toon Army were believers.

It couldn't last, even if their unbeaten start stretched all the way to Gameweek 12. A miserable festive run followed, with just one win from 11 matches between Nov. 7 and Jan. 21.

A disappointing end to the season saw Newcastle finish sixth.

3. Man City 2026–27 (Seven Wins)*

Erling Haaland, Phil Foden

It was a summer of significant change at the Etihad Stadium, as the Premier League's dominant force of the past decade said goodbye to the architect of their success, Guardiola, along with several key figures.

Guardiola's former assistant Enzo Maresca was handed the daunting task of stepping into his shoes, but the Italian appears poised to follow the trend of Guardiola's successors flourishing in their new roles.

Man City have won all seven of their matches so far, having played the last two with serious off-field uncertainty hanging over the club. All of this may ultimately be rendered meaningless after an independent commission found them guilty of 114 violations of the Premier League's financial regulations.

Nevertheless, their performances on the pitch have been undeniably impressive. City's flawless start includes wins at Man Utd and Liverpool, along with high-scoring victories over Sunderland and Ipswich Town.

2. Liverpool 2019–20 (Eight Wins)

Mohamed Salah, Virgil van Dijk

A fifth European triumph softened the blow of their agonizing runner-up finish in the 2018–19 Premier League, and Klopp's Reds entered 2019–20 with one clear objective.

Liverpool were relentless from the very start, reeling off eight consecutive wins. They didn't find themselves trailing in a match until Gameweek 5, and while a Daniel James-inspired Manchester United managed to take two points from them to end their perfect record, it would remain the only blot on their Premier League campaign until Feb. 29.

Klopp's side moved to the top of the table on Gameweek 2 and never looked back. They were utterly dominant and runaway champions. The season was suspended in March due to the Covid-19 pandemic, delaying their title coronation until the summer.

An inconsistent finish to the campaign meant they fell short of the 100-point mark, yet this remains one of the most commanding title victories in the league's history.

1. Chelsea 2005–06 (Nine Wins)

Didier Drogba

Maresca's City are just two wins away from equaling Chelsea's all-time record.

Liverpool had threatened to match the Blues' nine-game winning start as they launched their title defense in 2005–06. José Mourinho's side had stormed to the championship in the "Special One's" debut season in west London, and few expected Chelsea to surrender their crown.

Those expectations were justified by their outstanding start, which featured wins over London rivals Arsenal and Spurs. Frank Lampard's brace against Aston Villa propelled Chelsea to a seventh-straight victory and a new Premier League record, before they went on to thrash Liverpool at Anfield and beat Bolton Wanderers at home to reach nine.

A draw at Everton denied Mourinho's side the chance to match the all-time top-flight record of 11 consecutive wins set by Spurs in 1960–61. Nonetheless, Chelsea successfully defended their title, with Mourinho's second championship sealed by a 3–0 victory over Man Utd in April.
