PSG and Arsenal's Fiercest Battles: Reliving the Last Five Clashes Before Their Champions League Final Showdown

A historic Champions League final showdown arrives on Saturday as Paris Saint-Germain take on Arsenal in the ultimate battle for European football's greatest honor.

The defending European champions claimed their maiden Champions League title last season, an exhilarating campaign that included three encounters with their upcoming rivals. The two clubs are becoming well-acquainted adversaries on the European stage.

The clubs first crossed paths in the 1993–94 European Cup Winners' Cup, after which more than two decades passed before they met again. Yet there have now been five encounters over the last ten years, with a pivotal sixth now upon us.

Here is a breakdown of every PSG vs Arsenal clash in the 21st century.

PSG 1–1 Arsenal (Sept. 13, 2016)

Alexis Sanchez, Thiago Silva

Twenty-two years after their initial European encounters — which concluded with a draw and an Arsenal victory in the Cup Winners' Cup semifinal — PSG and Arsenal met once again. The occasion carried less weight this time around, with both sides competing in the Champions League group stage alongside Ludogorets and Basel, who posed little threat to either club.

Two meetings ultimately determined who would claim top spot in the group, but neither side could find a winner in the opening clash at Parc des Princes.

PSG burst out of the blocks at a remarkable pace, with Edinson Cavani nodding home after just 44 seconds to give the hosts an early advantage, before Alexis Sánchez delivered a well-timed equalizer in the 78th minute.

A game that seemed to be winding down was suddenly brought to life by a stoppage-time altercation between PSG's Marco Verratti and Arsenal's Olivier Giroud off the ball, resulting in both players receiving their second yellow cards of the evening.

The reverse fixture proved equally competitive between Arsène Wenger's Gunners and the Parisians, then managed by future Arsenal boss Unai Emery. The standout performers from the first game were once again central figures in another lively draw, this time ending 2–2.

Cavani broke the deadlock again, this time waiting until the 18th minute, but Giroud leveled before the break for the home side, converting from the penalty spot to set up a tightly contested second half.

Verratti made headlines again with an own goal that handed Arsenal their first lead across both fixtures, though Alex Iwobi responded with an own goal of his own to ensure neither team claimed victory. The draw ultimately suited Arsenal more, as they went on to top the group after PSG stumbled against Ludogorets in their final match.

Both clubs have evolved considerably since. Arsenal fielded the likes of Carl Jenkinson, Kieran Gibbs and Shkodran Mustafi at the Emirates Stadium, while a PSG squad featuring Alphonse Areola, Grzegorz Krychowiak and Lucas Moura has been substantially strengthened over the past decade.

Another eight years passed before the two giants were drawn together again, with PSG visiting Arsenal in the revamped league phase of the 2024–25 Champions League. The first of three meetings that season went Arsenal's way.

Luis Enrique's squad had yet to find the form that would eventually carry them to glory, and the Gunners made the most of the opportunity. Goals from Kai Havertz and Bukayo Saka gave Arsenal a comfortable advantage in what turned out to be a surprisingly subdued contest, finishing with a combined expected goals tally of just 1.11.

The victory contributed to Mikel Arteta's side finishing third in the league phase and advancing directly to the round of 16. PSG, by contrast, suffered three defeats that left them in 15th place and facing an unwanted knockout playoff tie.

PSG breezed through their playoff, however, hammering fellow Ligue 1 side Brest with 10 unanswered goals as their Champions League campaign truly came alive. Wins over Liverpool and Aston Villa followed, setting the stage for a semifinal showdown with Arsenal.

Arsenal entered the tie full of belief after comfortably eliminating PSV Eindhoven and, most impressively, Real Madrid in the earlier rounds, but this PSG side were a completely different challenge to the team they had beaten in the league phase.

Playing with supreme confidence and a devastating attacking trio, PSG snatched a vital away win at the Emirates in the first leg. A goal from Ousmane Dembélé in the fourth minute proved to be the only strike of the match, giving the French club a crucial advantage heading into the second leg in Paris.

Arsenal traveled to France with hopes of overcoming a one-goal deficit against an in-form PSG side, but their task shifted from difficult to near-impossible midway through the opening half. A stunning strike from Fabián Ruiz put the hosts ahead on the night and gave them a precious two-goal cushion on aggregate.

The Gunners pushed hard for a goal of their own, but were punished further with 20 minutes remaining as Achraf Hakimi slotted home to make it three on aggregate for PSG. Even a late effort from Saka could not ignite any semblance of a comeback.

PSG's celebrations were justifiably euphoric at the final whistle, while Arsenal trudged back to the away dressing room having absorbed a harsh lesson. In the end, the French giants proved simply too formidable, as Inter found out to their cost in the final.
