PSG and Bayern Munich Shatter Historic Champions League Semifinals Scoring Record

Paris Saint-Germain and Bayern Munich have etched their names in history, producing the highest-scoring Champions League semifinal match ever played.

The Parc des Princes was the setting for one of the most memorable nights in Champions League history on Tuesday, as PSG edged Bayern 5–4 to claim a narrow advantage heading into the second leg. The first leg will be remembered forever in competition lore, shattering numerous scoring records.

It marks the first occasion since the Champions League began in 1992–93 that nine goals have been scored in a single semifinal leg.

The previous record for the highest-scoring semifinal in the Champions League era stood at seven goals, set when Liverpool beat AS Roma 5–2 in the first leg of the 2017–18 campaign and matched when Manchester City overcame Real Madrid 4–3 to open their 2021–22 tie.

Tuesday's breathtaking clash between the Parisians and the Bavarians also marked the first time in Champions League semifinal history that five goals were netted in the opening half. Additionally, it is the first semifinal leg in the tournament's history where both sides scored four or more goals.

It was a spectacular encounter between arguably the two finest clubs in the world right now, and the stage is perfectly set for even more records to fall in the decisive second leg next week.

You have to travel back to the 1959–60 season to find the only other semifinal in the European Cup-Champions League's 71-year history where nine goals were scored. Eintracht Frankfurt dismantled Rangers 6–3 in the second leg of the semifinal before ultimately losing to Real Madrid in the final.

Frankfurt defeated Rangers 12–4 on aggregate, and those 16 combined goals across both legs remain the all-time record for the highest-scoring semifinal tie in European Cup-Champions League history.

Focusing strictly on Champions League records, the highest-scoring semifinal ties in tournament history produced 13 goals across both legs. Liverpool eliminated Roma 7–6 in the previously mentioned 2017–18 semifinals, and just last season, Inter knocked out Barcelona 7–6 to advance to the final.

Nonetheless, PSG's 5–4 victory over Bayern Munich stands as the highest-scoring semifinal first leg in the competition's 71-year history, regardless of era.

With Luis Enrique and Vincent Kompany leading two of the most potent attacking sides on the planet, it is entirely plausible that a similarly high-scoring affair awaits in the second leg. Should that prove to be the case, Frankfurt and Rangers' long-standing record could be under serious threat.
