PSG Boss Drops Bombshell: The Shocking Truth Behind Donnarumma's Dramatic Exit

Paris Saint-Germain's strategic advisor Luis Campos disclosed that Gianluigi Donnarumma's excessive wage expectations were the primary reason behind the club's decision to make him available for transfer during the summer window.

Manchester City seized the opportunity to acquire one of football's premier goalkeepers for a bargain price of £26 million ($35.4 million) this summer, waiting until the closing moments of Transfer Deadline Day to secure a favorable agreement while holding all the leverage in negotiations.

Donnarumma announced his own exit as early as August 12th following his exclusion from the first-team roster in favor of new signing Lucas Chevalier. The Italian goalkeeper stated that "someone has determined that I cannot remain part of this group" just before coach Luis Enrique took responsibility, clarifying that he sought "a different type" of goalkeeper.

Campos has now indicated that this choice was driven by financial considerations as much as tactical ones. Donnarumma had reached the final year of his PSG deal and discussions regarding a contract extension had remained unsuccessful.

"The institution takes precedence over any individual," Campos stated to RMC Sport. "That philosophy has shifted at PSG. With Donnarumma, it was multiple factors that resulted in this choice. When he requests compensation at the standard of previous PSG, not today's PSG..."

The Portuguese executive continued to describe how the club's future deals would feature substantial performance incentives rather than elevated guaranteed wages. "Our approach heavily emphasizes achievement: you receive more compensation when you merit it, and when you participate," Campos detailed. "We invested considerable time addressing the Gigio situation. We were compelled to identify alternatives if we couldn't establish an accord with him."

Donnarumma's representative Enzo Raiola maintained that his player did agree to reduced compensation during previous negotiations only to witness the club "alter the terms of engagement." Discussions were allegedly delayed until following the Champions League final, when PSG "reaffirmed their intention to proceed" per Raiola, before an abrupt shift in position at August's beginning.

Campos remained resolute, emphasizing that every PSG squad member would face identical treatment as Donnarumma. "The compensation structure applies universally," he stated matter-of-factly.

"The organization's foundation will not shift based on an individual who seeks special treatment. We will safeguard PSG. We consistently maintain the ambition to perform excellently and secure victories. Under this framework, everyone recognizes that the manager doesn't favor a player's reputation or history. Your previous achievements won't guarantee you a starting position at PSG. That represents our philosophy."
