PSG Clash with Newcastle: Bold Predictions, Key Lineups, and What to Expect

Among all the matches on the concluding day of Champions League league phase competition, none will carry more immediate significance than the encounter between Paris Saint-Germain and Newcastle United.

These clubs will meet for only their third encounter in history, having previously been drawn together in the notorious 'Group of Death' during the 2023–24 Champions League group stage. Newcastle dominated Luis Enrique's 4-2-4 formation at St. James' Park, and were harshly denied a narrow win in Paris due to a controversial handball call in added time that awarded PSG a penalty.

That represented PSG in their early days under Enrique, with the consistent French champions transforming into European contenders by the conclusion of the Spaniard's second campaign in charge.

Nevertheless, they haven't found their rhythm in 2025–26, and the previous week's loss at Sporting CP means the defending champions face the possibility of missing automatic qualification for the round of 16. PSG enters Wednesday's match with the same record as their rivals, and whoever loses will almost certainly drop from the top eight and be compelled to participate in the playoffs next month. A tie benefits neither side.

Newcastle have accumulated most of their 13 points at St. James' Park, and remain a considerably weaker force away from home. Therefore, it will require something extraordinary for them to defeat Enrique's team in Paris.

Achraf Hakimi, Nuno Mendes

Achraf Hakimi has been absent from club duty since November, having departed for the Africa Cup of Nations in December and missing the weekend's triumph over Auxerre due to injury. The fullback is expected to be available for Wednesday's fixture, however, and he's among several important players returning for the home team.

Along with Hakimi, Luis Enrique should have Fabián Ruiz, João Neves and Nuno Mendes at his disposal for Newcastle's arrival.

Marquinhos and Willian Pacho were given rest at the weekend, while Ousmané Dembélé and Désiré Doue came on as substitutes. All four could be part of a very formidable PSG starting eleven.

Bruno Guimarães

The visiting team faces midfield difficulties, having suffered another defeat at the weekend without Bruno Guimarães. The Brazilian has not yet been confirmed as unavailable for the journey to Paris due to the ankle problem he picked up last week.

There are also worries regarding Joelinton's knee problem, which caused his substitution against Villa. Should Guimarães and Joelinton be unavailable, we might see Howe return to deploying Nick Woltemade as an attacking midfielder. The German could play a crucial role in orchestrating Newcastle's fast breaks, with Yoane Wissa expected to spearhead the attack.

Jacob Murphy is expected to remain out with a hamstring problem, while Fabian Schär, Jamaal Lascelles and Tino Livramento are also unavailable.

Both sides enter this match without exceptional form, but Enrique will benefit from having key players back in the squad for midweek. PSG should resemble last season's exceptional version in terms of available personnel on Wednesday evening.

Newcastle, on the other hand, urgently require their skipper to be match-fit. It will be challenging regardless, but Howe possesses the ability to create problems for the home team. The Magpies haven't fully exploited their counter-attacking capabilities this season, despite signing an excellent playmaker (Woltemade) and pace merchant (Anthony Elanga) during the summer.

It wouldn't be shocking if PSG are caught off guard a few times by Newcastle's transitional threat, but the home team's superior quality should prevail against a defense that's susceptible to being broken down.
