Quansah vs Konsa: Who Should Arsenal Prioritize in Their Defensive Hunt?

Arsenal's pursuit of a new center back is said to have extended to the closing stages of this summer's World Cup, with Spain's Marc Pubill and English pair Jarell Quansah and Ezri Konsa among their primary targets.

Fabrizio Romano was the first to report an approach for Atlético Madrid's Pubill, but Spanish outlet AS claims the La Liga club has firmly turned down all bids and is instead looking to extend his contract. That unwillingness to sell has pushed the Gunners to explore alternative options.

Arsenal now appear to be turning their attention to domestic targets. Ben Jacobs reported that negotiations with Aston Villa over Konsa have been revived, but with a fee of over $81 million (£60 million) required to secure a deal, the club has also made contact with Bayer Leverkusen regarding Quansah, according to Sky Sports News.

Quansah or Konsa: Who Should Arsenal Sign?

As demonstrated by the interest in both Quansah and Konsa, and even the initial approach for Pubill, Arsenal have placed versatility at the very top of their recruitment criteria.

All three players are natural center backs who also have considerable experience at right back, a position that has been a concern for the Gunners as Jurriën Timber continues to manage the fitness problems that have hampered him for much of this year.

While there is no indication that Arsenal's shortlist is limited to just Quansah and Konsa, the English pair are clearly among the leading candidates being considered—particularly since they would contribute to the club's homegrown player quota, potentially making it simpler to facilitate departures for Myles Lewis-Skelly and Ethan Nwaneri, both of whom have been linked with moves away from the Emirates Stadium.

Quansah and Konsa are at very different points in their careers. At 28 with well over 200 Premier League appearances to his name, Konsa is a proven performer whose quality is relatively assured, though he is just two months from turning 29 and is clearly less of a long-term investment than Quansah.

While Quansah has age on his side, he remains more of an unknown quantity. The 23-year-old has made just 17 Premier League starts, having departed Liverpool last summer to join the Bundesliga, where he netted four goals in 28 appearances last season.

The upside with Quansah is undeniable—there is a case to be made that his ceiling exceeds Konsa's at this point—but whether Arteta can afford to gamble on potential rather than securing a proven name like Konsa remains an open question.

With the asking prices for both players believed to be broadly comparable, Arteta will need to assess the specific needs of his squad to make his decision.

It would appear that Arsenal stand to gain more from an experienced veteran like Konsa, rather than a developing talent like Quansah, whose opportunities for regular playing time could be restricted within Arsenal's already well-stocked defensive options.

Gabriel is unlikely to surrender his place as a regular center back starter, where he will almost certainly be partnered by William Saliba once fit. Timber's position as first-choice right back also looks secure when he is healthy, meaning any new arrival will need to be prepared to compete for minutes. At this stage of their respective careers, persuading Konsa to embrace that challenge may prove to be the more straightforward task.
