Advancing to the knockout rounds set up a meeting with 2010 runners-up Netherlands, a fixture fans believed Berhalter's men had a genuine chance of winning. The USMNT's Record at World Cups
The first-ever 1930 World Cup held in Uruguay featured only 13 nations representing three different federations—every match took place in Montevideo over a span of 17 days. The USMNT dominated Belgium and Paraguay in a three-team Group 4, advancing directly to the semifinals, where Argentina then romped to a 6–1 victory to secure their spot in the final.
That remains the deepest run the USMNT has ever made in the tournament. A quarterfinal berth in 2002 stands as the only other occasion the Stars and Stripes have reached the last eight, with several other round of 16 appearances ending in elimination.
The last time the USMNT played host to the World Cup—back in 1994—they were eliminated by eventual champions Brazil, falling 1–0 to a goal from iconic striker Bebeto.
