The MLS Cup's Most Historic Clubs
Seattle Sounders: From 2016 through 2020, no club in MLS matched the consistency of Brian Schmetzer's Sounders. They appeared in the MLS Cup final in four of his opening five seasons at the helm—the one year they fell short of the Conference final came via a heartbreaking penalty shootout defeat to Portland Timbers—and they collected four Western Conference titles along the way.
Houston Dynamo FC: Prior to Seattle's dominant era came a period of prolonged achievement for the Dynamo, who claimed back-to-back MLS Cups in 2006 and 2007 before returning to consecutive finals in 2011 and 2012—though on both of those occasions they were unable to go all the way.
D.C. United: MLS launched in 1996, riding the wave of enthusiasm generated by the hugely successful 1994 World Cup, and the league's early powerhouse was D.C. United. Three of the first four MLS Cups found their way into the capital club's trophy room—they were runners-up in 1998—before a fourth title was secured in 2004.
LA Galaxy: Undeniably, the most decorated franchise in MLS Cup history is LA Galaxy. No other club comes close to matching their number of final appearances, nor can any side rival their six MLS Cup triumphs (2002, 2005, 2011, 2012, 2014 and 2024). Factor in that David Beckham, Landon Donovan and Zlatan Ibrahimovič have all contributed to those achievements, and it becomes clear why the Galaxy occupy such a prominent place in MLS lore.
