Raheem Sterling Officially Seals His Next Career Chapter

Chelsea and Raheem Sterling have reached a mutual decision to terminate his contract, bringing an end to his period away from the first team at Stamford Bridge.

Originally acquired for £47.5 million ($65.4 million) to launch the BlueCo ownership period in summer 2022, Sterling found himself excluded from the squad at the beginning of the 2024–25 season and hasn't featured for Chelsea since, having spent the previous campaign on a disappointing loan spell at Arsenal before remaining unused for the opening half of this season.

"We appreciate Raheem for his efforts during his time as a Chelsea player and extend our best wishes for his future career endeavors," Chelsea announced in an official statement confirming Sterling's exit.

Sterling had 18 months remaining on his deal as of January and, after failing to attract potential buyers during the opening month of the transfer period, began discussions regarding a possible contract dissolution.

The specific details of Chelsea's arrangement with Sterling remain confidential, though BBC Sport reports that talks were made complex by the winger's substantial weekly earnings believed to be approximately £325,000. He was owed roughly £22 million in remaining wages through his contract's conclusion.

Discussions with Chelsea would have likely begun from that figure, though the final settlement amount between both sides has not been disclosed.

Chelsea had hoped to transfer Sterling permanently but locating clubs willing to match his significant wage demands proved unfeasible, compelling the Blues to seek a contract termination alternative.

During the summer, Sterling expressed his position clearly. He preferred to stay within London, and this preference is believed to continue.

Chelsea facilitated several potential loan opportunities for Sterling over the summer, including interest from Juventus and Bayer Leverkusen, but the 31-year-old showed no desire to move abroad. He allegedly declined these proposals and opted to remain inactive for the subsequent six months.

With his Chelsea contract obligations resolved, numerous new opportunities have emerged for Sterling, whose desire to stay in London may soon be fulfilled.

Fulham and West Ham United have been identified as interested parties, but additional offers from other London clubs may materialize given Sterling's status as a free agent. Brentford, Crystal Palace and Tottenham Hotspur represent other London-based teams that will have noted Sterling's geographical preference.

As he is now without a club, Sterling can join a new team beyond the transfer window deadline of Feb. 2.

The impact will largely depend on Chelsea's settlement terms with Sterling, but the winger's exit concludes what has been an extremely costly problem at Stamford Bridge.

Following his unexpected exclusion in summer 2024, Sterling has earned approximately £22 million in wages, with Arsenal contributing only a small portion during his loan period last season. Being released from this financial obligation over the remaining 18 months represents a clear benefit for the Blues.

Sterling's exit also concludes Chelsea's "bomb squad" situation. Several players were instructed to train separately from Enzo Maresca's main group this season, with Sterling and Axel Disasi being the only two remaining when the summer transfer window ended. Disasi has since been given an opportunity to rejoin the squad under Liam Rosenior.

Since Sterling wasn't included in Chelsea's squad this season, the Blues won't need to find a direct replacement, having already strengthened their wide positions with the acquisitions of Alejandro Garnacho and Jamie Gittens during the summer.
