Ranking the Four Premier League Clubs Battling to Land Gilberto Mora

There were indications that Gilberto Mora's departure from the Mexico squad ahead of their loss to Chile involved more than was publicly acknowledged.

A 1–0 defeat marked a troubling beginning to the Rafael Márquez era, following an impressive World Cup campaign under veteran manager Javier Aguirre on home turf.

Fans are eager to see the new coach — who retired as El Tri's joint-fourth-most-capped player in history — bring through Mexico's most exciting young talents, with Mora leading that conversation.

Having become the youngest player ever to feature for Mexico at a World Cup this summer, the 17-year-old netted his first international goal in a 1–1 draw against Colombia on Sept. 27. Following that, however, Mora was left unused against Peru and absent for the match against the USMNT before departing camp entirely.

"Physical discomfort" was cited as the official reason, though many have questioned that explanation. Mora turns 18 on Oct. 14, which makes him eligible for a transfer abroad, and those doubtful of the official story believe an imminent move to a "major European club" was the real driver behind his absence.

Club Tijuana stand to receive a record Liga MX transfer fee from his sale, and Mora's representatives understandably want to avoid any injury derailing the deal. ESPN anticipates an announcement about his next destination on his birthday next week.

Could a Premier League switch be on the horizon for Mexico's most promising talent? Here are four potential English clubs for the playmaker, ordered by likelihood and fit.

4. Man Utd

Bruno Fernandes

The Premier League's financial power means Mora could attract interest from a wide range of clubs.

A growing tier of mid-table sides has shown a knack for nurturing young talent and developing them into top players, yet transfer speculation has not yet connected Mora with the likes of Brighton & Hove Albion or Bournemouth.

Instead, the Mexican's ability has been considered worthy of elite-level attention from the outset, and Manchester United are among the 'Big Six' clubs reportedly interested in the soon-to-be 18-year-old — one too young to have witnessed Javier Hernández's mischievous brilliance at Old Trafford.

While the Red Devils remain heavily dependent on reigning PFA Player of the Year Bruno Fernandes for creative output, pursuing Mora doesn't appear to be on INEOS's radar in 2027. Man Utd overhauled their midfield over the summer and are expected to focus on strengthening Michael Carrick's defensive unit next year.

3. Chelsea

Behdad Eghbali

Chelsea have been aggressive accumulators of talent since BlueCo took ownership in 2022.

This relentless stockpiling has created a bloated squad, though the club can offload unwanted or unready players to Ligue 1 side Strasbourg, another BlueCo-owned entity.

With numerous clubs reportedly pursuing Mora, the teenager is unlikely to be drawn to Chelsea if it means spending his near future in France — regardless of how valuable such a loan spell might prove for his European development.

Chelsea's interest in the Mexican playmaker is easy to imagine — they're rarely absent from transfer discussions. However, Mora will likely find other offers more appealing. Fellow rising star Estêvão is already struggling for playing time with Cole Palmer and Morgan Rogers flourishing alongside João Pedro.

2. Arsenal

Mikel Arteta

Reports connecting Mora to Arsenal have remained vague until now. Fraz Fletcher, via AS, claims the Premier League champions are "stepping up their interest" in the Mexican, having monitored him closely during the World Cup.

The club has reportedly held discussions with Mora's agent, Rafaela Pimenta, with both Mikel Arteta and sporting director Andrea Berta said to be impressed by the teenager's qualities.

AS suggests Mora could eventually be positioned as Martin Ødegaard's long-term replacement in north London, though the Norwegian's form at the start of the 2026–27 season indicates he's intent on bouncing back from two underwhelming personal campaigns.

Furthermore, Arsenal fans believe they already have Ødegaard's natural successor — currently on loan at Borussia Dortmund. Ethan Nwaneri offers a different profile to both Mora and Ødegaard, yet could develop into a dangerous attacking threat given his powerful shooting ability.

Mora is the thrilling, unpredictable talent supporters crave, but he's not a player Arsenal urgently need.

1. Liverpool

Andoni Iraola, Florian Wirtz, Alexander Isak

The Mora to Liverpool link is undoubtedly generating the most buzz online.

TUDN's David Faitelson reported that Pimenta had received an offer from the Reds for Tijuana reportedly worth up to $50 million. Yet Mora's agent revealed nothing when pressed directly on his future.

"Please understand that I don't comment on transfer rumors," Pimenta told Portuguese outlet Record. "I won't say anything at all about the transfer of any player. Thank you very much for your understanding."

The North American market is one Liverpool have rarely explored, and should Mora make the move, he would become the club's first-ever Mexican player.

In reality, a Premier League switch for the slight playmaker at this point in his career feels premature. Liverpool have been the most heavily linked, yet a move to Anfield doesn't appear to be the right fit. The Reds are already working to unlock the best from another creative talent in Florian Wirtz, who has found it difficult to adapt after years of dominance in Germany.

That's not to say Mora shouldn't be making the move to Europe. He absolutely should leave Liga MX and test himself on the continent, but the current Premier League environment — defined by physicality and elite athleticism — simply isn't the right setting for a 5'6" teenager with so little top-level experience.

A stepping stone elsewhere in Europe is what he truly needs.
