Raphinha and Fermin Ignite Camp Nou as Barcelona Dazzle Athletic Club with Brilliant Display

Barcelona emphatically beat Athletic Club 2–0 on Thursday to claim victory in their first home match of the season under the Camp Nou floodlights.

It was a thoroughly one-sided contest from the opening whistle, with Barcelona controlling proceedings and repeatedly testing Unai Simón. The Catalans took some time to find a way through, but Pedri and Raphinha linked up in a stunning move for the Brazilian to net his third of the campaign and ease the slowly mounting tension before half-time.

Hansi Flick's side continued to assert their authority after the interval, yet despite carving out opportunity after opportunity, they were not as sharp as in their season opener, and the result remained uncertain for quite some time. The most alarming moment of the evening arrived when Oihan Sancet rattled the post from range, putting Barça on edge midway through the second period.

Barcelona persisted in their efforts, and their determination was ultimately rewarded when Aymeric Laporte botched an attempted back-pass and the ever-alert Fermín López punished him for it, slotting home his third goal in two matches to extend the lead in the closing stages.

Having wrapped up the 2025–26 season with a flawless home record, Barcelona picked up where they left off with an impressive victory on their return to Camp Nou. Focus now shifts to another home fixture against Rayo Vallecano on Monday.

The Moment That Defined the Game

Barcelona were in control from the outset, but Flick's men found it remarkably hard to break the deadlock. The Catalans have become known for their fast starts under the German manager, regularly finding the net within the opening 15 minutes across the previous two La Liga campaigns.

However, when opponents weather the initial storm, Barcelona can occasionally grow impatient and lose their edge, giving rivals a foothold in the game. That was the situation on Thursday evening, but just as Barcelona appeared at their most toothless and a goalless first half seemed likely, Pedri and Raphinha turned the game on its head.

The gifted midfielder collected the ball near the center circle, spun away from his marker, drove forward and then slipped a perfectly weighted pass through for Raphinha, who timed his run to perfection to get in behind the defense.

The Brazilian showed the composure of a seasoned striker as he calmly rounded a helpless Unai Simón, composed himself and rolled the ball into the net to finally give the hosts the lead 37 minutes in. A match that had appeared increasingly stagnant suddenly opened up for Barça, courtesy of a brilliant combination between two of their key performers.

Against an Athletic Club side that offered little going forward, breaking the deadlock was always going to be the primary challenge. Flick's men were able to maintain their grip on the game from that point, though things could have looked very different had the stalemate persisted longer.

GK: Joan García—7.2: Unlike the Elche fixture, García was called upon to demonstrate his sweeping ability for the first time this season, and he delivered when it mattered. Two matches in, two clean sheets for last season's standout goalkeeper in La Liga.

RB: Eric García—7.5: Effectively neutralized Nico Williams and in doing so shut down Athletic's attacking threat. Continued to look for passes in behind the defensive line for Yamal for the second game running.

CB: Pau Cubarsí—7.3: The young defender was impeccable on his seasonal debut, winning every duel, putting his body on the line when necessary and barely wasting a pass. The standout young talent from the World Cup remains in excellent shape.

CB: Gerard Martín—7.5: A clumsy interception attempt resulted in a yellow card for the left back. He was largely dependable but made a few errors that fortunately did not prove costly.

LB: Xavi Espart—7.4: Another impressive display from the La Masia product, who was superb defensively on the left flank while also contributing meaningfully to Barça's attacking play. Showed a strong connection with Gordon ahead of him. Unfortunate to be booked following Martín's error.

DM: Marc Bernal—7.3: Understated for the second consecutive game, but Bernal fulfilled his responsibilities without issue, building Barça's play from deep and providing balance to a side that pushed forward aggressively from the start.

DM: Pedri—8.4: One of those performances where Pedri was simply unplayable. The game revolved around him, and his assist for Raphinha's opener ranks among the finest of the early season.

RW: Lamine Yamal—8.1: A much-improved showing from Yamal, who was noticeably more involved and lively than in his season debut. He produced some of his trademark moments of brilliance and should have opened his account for the season were it not for Simón and the crossbar. That said, he still lacks full sharpness and gave the ball away unnecessarily on a few occasions.

AM: Fermín López—8.1: His relentless movement and intelligent positioning made him a constant threat in dangerous zones throughout the night. It was precisely his tireless running and instinct for the ball that put him in the right place to tap in and double Barça's advantage.

LW: Anthony Gordon—7.3: Made a lively start with some neat dribbles and a few eye-catching passes that drew appreciation from the crowd, highlighting a less-publicized aspect of his game. His impact faded as the match wore on.

ST: Raphinha—8.3: Who needs a traditional striker when Raphinha is performing at this level? Another outstanding display from the Brazilian, capped by a well-taken goal that broke the deadlock.

SUB: Dani Olmo (63' for Bernal)—7.0: Produced a couple of slick passes during his time on the pitch and looked at ease operating as a false nine.

SUB: Rodri (63' for Raphinha)—6.4: Settled into a screening role in front of the backline during his Barça debut.
