Rashford Breaks Silence on Anthony Gordon's Stunning Barcelona Move

Rashford Breaks Silence on Anthony Gordon's Stunning Barcelona Move

Marcus Rashford continues to "prioritize" a permanent switch to Barcelona this summer and remains undeterred by the club's expensive acquisition of Anthony Gordon, a player who appears to share a similar profile to his fellow Englishman.

Barcelona are showing no signs of complacency after winning consecutive La Liga titles, having already wrapped up the €80 million ($93 million) deal for the pacey winger from Newcastle United.

The terms and swiftness of the transfer surprised many, even though it had been apparent that Gordon would be departing Tyneside at the conclusion of the 2025–26 season. Champions League semifinalists Bayern Munich had been mentioned as suitors, while Gordon had previously found it hard to turn down Liverpool.

Instead, Barcelona acted with remarkable speed to seal the deal as they look to strengthen their attack with two additions following Robert Lewandowski's exit.

While Gordon can operate as a center forward, Barça's reported interest in Julián Álvarez indicates the Englishman is seen more as a backup to Raphinha. Consequently, Rashford's prospects in Catalonia have come under increased scrutiny.

Barcelona still hold the option to sign Rashford permanently from Manchester United for approximately $35 million (€30 million). The winger had an impressive loan stint under Hansi Flick, registering 25 goal contributions across all competitions.

Flick appeared satisfied with Rashford's performances, and securing him outright for a relatively modest fee seemed like a sensible move. However, Barcelona have so far held back, and Gordon's arrival now makes it seem unlikely that the Englishman will continue in Catalonia.

Nevertheless, Rashford is holding firm in his hopes for the preferred outcome. According to Mundo Deportivo, the 29-year-old is intent on remaining at the club and has not been affected by the Gordon signing, reportedly because he was already aware of the club's interest in his compatriot.

Rashford is believed to be waiting on Barça's decision and has not yet entertained offers from other clubs. The England international is also said to be considering whether a role as Lamine Yamal's backup could be viable should Roony Bardghji depart after just one season at the club. What remains evident, however, is that Rashford is "obsessed" with the idea of lifting the Champions League trophy with Barcelona.

Barcelona's New Plan for Permanent Rashford Purchase—Report

Barcelona's financial position makes for fascinating reading. For a club perpetually portrayed as teetering on the edge of insolvency, they have invested heavily in Gordon and tabled a bid for Alvarez. Yet the bargain $35 million asking price for Rashford still appears to stretch beyond Barcelona's current means.

Having flirted with the idea of extending his loan for another season, the Catalan club are reportedly planning to offer just over half of Rashford's buyout clause, according to the Daily Mail. Given United's resolute stance on previous Barcelona proposals, it would be a major surprise if such a low bid were accepted.

Potential Alternatives to Barcelona for Rashford

With his Barcelona future hanging by a thread, Manchester United — who had hoped the Spanish champions would exercise their purchase option without complications — may now need to identify an alternative buyer.

Despite the change in leadership at Old Trafford, Rashford's time at United is firmly over.

Fortunately, his standout campaign with Barça has boosted his market value considerably, and there will be no shortage of clubs eager to land the Englishman, who is set to feature at the World Cup this summer.

Bayern Munich were in the running for Gordon and are seeking reinforcements behind Luis Díaz, while Arsenal look almost certain to pursue a top-quality left winger. Rashford has previously attracted their interest, though a deal has never come close to fruition. United would also be reluctant to sell to the Gunners given their likely title ambitions next season.

Chelsea are rarely absent from such transfer conversations, and Tottenham Hotspur may be eager to make a statement of intent during Roberto De Zerbi's first transfer window in charge.
