Rattled USMNT Fights to Escape the Shadow of a 58-Year Nightmare Against Canada

Mauricio Pochettino has acknowledged that his American players will be contending with the unseen challenge of exhaustion while also trying to prevent a third straight loss to Canada on Tuesday.

The Stars and Stripes have historically controlled this matchup. From 1985 to 2019, Canada went 17 straight games without defeating their neighbors. However, Jesse Marsch's tenacious current squad has beaten the USMNT twice, taking the last friendly between the two sides in September 2024 before securing third place at the 2025 Concacaf Nations League.

Should Canada win again in Minnesota, it would mark the first time since 1968 that the Canadians have recorded three straight victories over their closest rivals.

If history alone wasn't enough to fire up Canada, Marsch carries the added motivation of having been overlooked for the USMNT head coaching role before Pochettino was appointed. "There's definitely not a grudge. People want to take it that way, which is fine," he said casually ahead of Tuesday's less-than-friendly encounter.

"So, for me personally, I can honestly say this, in all three of the matches where we've been tasked with playing the U.S. is I know that the U.S. is a good team and they're someone that we measure ourselves against and I want to do everything I can to give these guys the best opportunity to go out and play at their best and win the match."

Canada is clearly fired up, but Pochettino's side is running on empty.

Pochettino struck a balance between caution and confidence in his preview of Tuesday's friendly. The Argentine manager noted that the team's flight from Phoenix had been delayed, disrupting preparations for a group of players already worn down by a packed fixture schedule this fall. While all these factors would "affect" his squad, Pochettino remained upbeat.

"It's about to keep growing and I think supporting the players and to finish the [window] in a very good condition," the USMNT head coach said, suggesting there could be some squad rotation to prevent overworking key players ahead of a grueling club schedule.

"But I am sure that the players, even if we were competing a lot and traveling, that can affect, we are going to be ready for [Tuesday], with fresh energy. And I think it's a good opportunity for continuous growing in that camp."
