Raúl Asencio has successfully come through surgery on his tibia and will now embark on a recovery process anticipated to last as long as four months.
The 23-year-old has yet to appear for Madrid in 2026–27, with his last outing for the club coming in the final La Liga fixture of the previous campaign back in May.
MARCA reports that the problem, a stress fracture in his right leg, had been troubling Asencio since January, with alternative treatments having failed to provide relief.
The operation is intended to resolve the issue, but it means Asencio could be absent for the remainder of this calendar year, posing challenges for both manager José Mourinho and the Madrid board.
Asencio Decision May Change Transfer Plans

Asencio's operation leaves Real Madrid severely short of central defensive cover for the rest of 2026.
Dean Huijsen, Antonio Rüdiger and new arrival Ibrahima Konaté have been the center backs deployed across Mourinho's first eight matches of the new campaign, while fellow first-team option Éder Militão remains another long-term injury absentee.
Navigating several months of the season with only three available center backs is far from ideal, and Mourinho will need to carefully manage his players' workloads as the season progresses.
Real Madrid Center Back Options
Player | Games Missed Since Start of 2025–26 Season |
|---|---|
Ibrahima Konaté | 0 |
Raúl Asencio | 11 |
Dean Huijsen | 13 |
Antonio Rüdiger | 25 |
Éder Militão | 40 |
During the summer transfer window, speculation emerged that Madrid would look to offload Asencio to create squad room for a new center back, with Inter Milan's Alessandro Bastoni and Dortmund's Nico Schlotterbeck among the names mentioned. That move never materialized, however. More recent reports suggest Los Blancos have turned their attention to Bayer Leverkusen's Jarell Quansah.
Evidence from the early part of the new season suggests Los Blancos could benefit from adding another top-quality defender, with Mourinho's team having kept just a single clean sheet—against newly promoted Málaga at home—so far in 2026–27.
Any attempt to move in the January window to secure that additional player could now be complicated, should the still-recovering Asencio prove impossible to sell in order to free up a roster spot.
Does Asencio Have a Future With Real Madrid?

Asencio has accumulated 80 first-team appearances for Real Madrid since making his debut in the 2024–25 season, establishing himself as a valuable squad contributor under Carlo Ancelotti, Xabi Alonso and Álvaro Arbeloa.
His combative defensive approach and physical presence have invited comparisons with Madrid legend Sergio Ramos, though doubts remain over whether the player who joined the club at 13 will ever grow into the elite-level defender a club of Madrid's stature demands.
Off-pitch matters have also cast a shadow over his time at the club. He was fined €14,400 ($16,700) and had his driving license suspended for eight months following a drink-driving incident in August.
In the wake of that episode, Mourinho described Asencio as an "exemplary professional" on the training ground, but issued a clear warning regarding his wider responsibilities.
He said: "A Real Madrid player is a Real Madrid player 24 hours a day. Seven days a week. And 12 months a year. Everything you do outside your professional life is still Real Madrid. It continues to damage the prestige of a club that is untouchable. That can't be touched. And with that, I'm practically saying that ... I'm not happy.
"We all make mistakes. But accumulated mistakes ... That's a different story."
