RB Leipzig Make Bold Move to Hijack Liverpool's £50 Million Transfer Chase

German Bundesliga club RB Leipzig have reportedly set their sights on Liverpool's Harvey Elliott for a potential summer transfer as they look to address possible departures from their squad.
Leipzig have made contact with the Premier League title holders regarding a possible deal, with discussions currently underway, although negotiations remain in early stages, according to The Athletic. The German outfit were said to be among several clubs showing interest in the midfielder during this transfer window, with Liverpool establishing two distinct price points for their player: either more than £40 million ($53.1 million) including a buyback clause, or exceeding £50 million ($66.4 million) without such provisions.
Elliott has been subject to transfer speculation since the beginning of July. The 22-year-old featured in 18 Premier League matches during the previous campaign, netting once and providing two assists. The midfielder's standout moment came during the Champions League last-16 tie, where he scored the decisive goal in the first leg away to Paris Saint-Germain in France. Liverpool ultimately exited the competition following a penalty shootout defeat in the second leg at home.
His trophy cabinet includes two EFL Cup victories and two UEFA Euro U21 championships, alongside last season's Premier League title, though the arrivals of Florian Wirtz and Hugo Ekitiké may reduce the attacking midfielder's playing opportunities under new manager Arne Slot. Elliott demonstrates flexibility across multiple positions, having featured five or more times as an attacking midfielder, central midfielder, and on both flanks.
Elliott could potentially fill the void left by Xavi Simons, who has been connected with a switch to Chelsea, with reports suggesting the player is eager to facilitate the transfer. Should such a move materialize, Simons would reunite with fellow Dutchman Jorrel Hato in the capital.
Simons is not the sole player generating transfer speculation this summer, as Benjamin Šeško remains a hot topic in striker discussions. Both Manchester United and Newcastle United are pursuing the forward's signature, with each club having lodged official offers.
Elliott played the entire match in a preseason encounter against Athletic Club, finding the net in a commanding 4–1 triumph.
