Real Madrid Abandon Two Club Legends in Bold Push for Liverpool Superstar

Real Madrid allegedly view David Alaba and Antonio Rüdiger as expendable beyond the 2025–26 campaign.

Considerable attention has focused on Real Madrid's ambition to launch a fresh chapter under Xabi Alonso, featuring dynamic young talent throughout the squad. The organization ended its relationship with Luka Modrić following 13 seasons, creating opportunities for 20-year-old Arda Güler's emergence.

Los Blancos also said goodbye to Lucas Vázquez during a defensive restructuring this summer. Real Madrid invested a club-record £50 million ($66.4 million) for 20-year-old Dean Huijsen, acquired 22-year-old Álvaro Carreras and finalized the highly anticipated signing of Trent Alexander-Arnold.

Given the influx of fresh talent arriving in Madrid, the Spanish powerhouse is evaluating their existing roster, with 33-year-old Alaba and 32-year-old Rüdiger potentially facing exits following next season's conclusion.

Per AS, both center-backs are "heading toward departure" from Real Madrid. The organization allegedly shows no interest in extending either player's contract, both set to expire in June 2026.

David Alaba, Antonio Rüdiger

Between the two defenders, Rüdiger stands a better chance of altering the club's perspective if he maintains fitness and delivers exceptional performances under new manager Alonso, according to the Spanish publication. Alaba, however, appears to have no long-term prospects wearing the white jersey.

The organization allegedly preferred the Austrian's departure this summer, but received "no bids" for the player who has featured in merely 31 matches over the past two seasons due to injuries. Alaba's existing deal may keep him at the club for one more year, but his declining physical condition and performance will likely confine him to substitute appearances.

The possible exits of both Alaba and Rüdiger create an opportunity for Ibrahima Konaté. The defender, available as a free transfer from Liverpool next summer, represents the club's "rebuilding strategy" for the central defensive role.

Real Madrid hopes the French international will emulate his former Liverpool colleague Alexander-Arnold by relocating to the Spanish capital. Konaté's acquisition would enable the club to confidently release Alaba and Rüdiger while constructing a roster designed for sustained success.
