Real Madrid Bid For Julian Alvarez, But Atletico Madrid Fires Back With Fierce Rejection

Atlético Madrid striker Julián Alvarez is at the center of the most captivating and dramatic transfer story of the summer, with Barcelona, Arsenal, Paris Saint-Germain, and now Real Madrid all declaring their interest in the Argentine forward, despite fierce pushback from Los Rojiblancos.

Real Madrid submitted a bid of €150 million ($173.2 million) for the 26-year-old following a Board of Directors meeting, as confirmed by the club in an official statement on Tuesday. Atlético, however, turned it down.

"After studying and evaluating it, Atlético de Madrid has thanked the club for the offer, made within the framework of the good relations existing between both clubs, and has rejected it, referring to the player's release clause," Real Madrid stated.

Alvarez's current contract extends through 2030. Los Rojiblancos have previously pointed to Alvarez's €500 million ($583 million) release clause and made it crystal clear they have no intention of selling their star player; however, reports from last week indicated the club might entertain a transfer fee of at least €120 million ($140 million) to consider parting ways with Alvarez.

Most recently, Atlético bluntly rejected a bid for Alvarez from Barcelona, who opened negotiations with an offer worth €100 million ($116 million) last week — a straightforward cash proposal that included no add-ons or player exchanges.

Shortly after Real Madrid's statement went public, Atlético fired back with one of their own on social media, taking issue with their rivals' claim that Atlético had "thanked" them for the offer.

"Official statement setting out our clarifications regarding the official statement from our neighbors Real Madrid," the club wrote. "1. You cut the part of the Pope's video where he said he was also an Atléti fan.

"2. You may have mistaken politeness for gratitude, but make no mistake: we are not grateful to you for anything. 3. We are not considering or evaluating any offers for Julián. 4. How could we not get along, when you make us laugh even more than Barcelona does.

"P.S. Taking advantage of the good relationship with your new president, let's see if you stop 'poaching' players from our Academy. Many thanks!"
