Real Madrid Desperately Want This Shocking England Star—But the Bold Move Could Backfire

Real Madrid are reportedly keeping tabs on Bayer Leverkusen and England defender Jarell Quansah.

The 23-year-old made the move to the Bundesliga club from Liverpool for an initial fee of £30 million ($40 million) during the summer of 2025 and has made a strong impression in Germany.

Quansah racked up 43 appearances for Leverkusen across all competitions throughout 2025–26, netting five goals, and earned a place in Thomas Tuchel's England squad for the summer's World Cup.

The seven-time international came up through the ranks at Liverpool as a center back, but has recently established himself at the international level on the right side of the defense.

According to SPORT BILD, Real Madrid are "showing great interest" in Quansah, as they look to bolster their defensive options further next year.

Madrid brought in three defenders this summer in Marc Cucurella, Denzel Dumfries, and Ibrahima Konaté, with Trent Alexander-Arnold, Dean Huijsen, and Álvaro Carreras all arriving the previous year. Even so, the backline has appeared vulnerable at times this season, with José Mourinho's side managing just one clean sheet in eight matches to date.

SPORT BILD's report suggests Los Blancos have their eye on the adaptable Quansah, who is said to be a "close friend" of Jude Bellingham. He is also a former Liverpool teammate of Alexander-Arnold, another player who made the switch from Merseyside to Madrid.

The report also notes that Chelsea and Arsenal have expressed interest in Quansah, potentially creating a bidding war for his services, while Liverpool retain a buy-back clause valued at €70 million ($79 million).

Would Quansah Add Anything to Madrid?

Madrid's need for defensive reinforcements is evident. While Mourinho's side has struggled to keep clean sheets, a shortage of depth has become a growing concern. Éder Militão and Raúl Asencio remain ongoing injury worries for the club, while 33-year-old Antonio Rüdiger has fewer than twelve months left on his deal.

Quansah would provide cover across the backline both centrally and on the right flank, where the two current options Alexander-Arnold and Dumfries are considerably more attack-oriented.

The question—given the likely price tag—is whether Quansah would genuinely raise the quality at Madrid, rather than simply serving as additional cover in Mourinho's defensive unit.

The young defender has largely been dependable in Germany, but was allowed to depart Liverpool just over a year ago and has yet to fully convince England supporters with his performances at international level.

Featuring regularly at right back for both club and country this season, the 6'3" Quansah offers a degree of defensive reliability, but lacks the creative instincts displayed by the likes of Alexander-Arnold.

The pair have been alternated at right back for England during the international break, with Quansah starting the 3–2 loss to Spain and Alexander-Arnold coming into the lineup for Tuesday's 2–0 victory over Czechia.

When asked why the Leverkusen star was preferred over Alexander-Arnold against Spain, Tuchel told reporters: "We needed Jarell Quansah's pace and ability to think as a central defender. He was top class at the World Cup, he was top class in training this week. He was excellent in this game."
