Real Madrid Drops Bombshell on Mbappe's Semifinal Fate Against Atletico Madrid

Kylian Mbappé will not feature in Real Madrid's squad for Thursday's Spanish Super Cup semifinal clash with Atlético Madrid.

The French striker has been battling a knee injury for approximately one month. This problem forced Mbappé to miss the Champions League encounter against Manchester City in December, though he managed to complete the full duration in Madrid's last three matches of 2025 despite the discomfort.

It seems this temporary discomfort has resulted in an extended absence, with New Year's Eve reports suggesting Mbappé would be unavailable for the opening three weeks of 2026. Xabi Alonso maintained cautious optimism, but even the resilient 27-year-old couldn't overcome the medical team's decision this time.

Following Tuesday morning's training session in the Spanish capital, Madrid's team departed for Saudi Arabia for the four-club tournament. Mbappé's absence was notably evident.

Madrid's top goalscorer will definitely miss Thursday's city derby, and should Real advance to face either Barcelona or Athletic Club in the final, his participation remains doubtful.

This represents a significant setback. Mbappé has already netted 29 goals in all competitions this campaign. By contrast, the team's second-highest scorers, Vinicius Junior and Jude Bellingham, have managed five goals each.

Gonzalo García increased his personal count to three during Sunday's 90-minute performance against Real Betis. Playing centrally in Mbappé's absence, the youth product delivered a flawless hat-trick.

"I feel extremely proud," Gonzalo expressed. "Being a Real Madrid supporter from childhood and spending numerous years in the academy, receiving applause from all these supporters represents a truly special moment I'll treasure always."

Despite accumulating just 10 senior appearances throughout his Real Madrid journey, Gonzalo fully understands the expectations this jersey carries. "We understand what this shirt represents," he informed journalists following his memorable evening, "and to put it simply... it means capturing every trophy."

That mission continues in Saudi Arabia minus Mbappé. The French star will be sorely missed, particularly against opponents who previously demolished Real 5–2 this season despite Mbappé's presence and goal contribution. Another treble from Gonzalo wouldn't hurt.
