Real Madrid Face Villarreal: Key Battles, Bold Predictions, and Expected Lineups Revealed

Real Madrid Face Villarreal: Key Battles, Bold Predictions, and Expected Lineups Revealed

Three weeks after a disastrous Madrid derby, Real Madrid finally have the opportunity to shake off the lingering sting of defeat with what should be a fairly straightforward encounter against Villarreal on Saturday.

The newly merged September-October international break arrived at the worst possible moment for Los Blancos. They had just endured a 2–1 defeat to Atlético Madrid and had no opportunity to bounce back, left to disperse to their respective international squads until club football returned in October.

Now back in the Spanish capital, José Mourinho's side will be desperate to secure all three points in front of a home crowd ready to turn on the team at the first sign of trouble. A win is equally vital to keep the club within striking distance of Barcelona at the top of the table.

The reigning Spanish champions have been flawless in 2026–27, already opening up a six-point advantage over Real Madrid. With El Clásico on the horizon, the 15-time European champions cannot afford another stumble.

The encouraging news is that Villarreal have managed just two wins this season. The Yellow Submarine began the campaign without a victory in their opening six matches before picking up wins against Málaga and Levante prior to the international pause.

Real Madrid Get Back to Winning Ways

Kylian Mbappé

Real Madrid have been far from convincing under Mourinho thus far, but that doesn't mean they'll be undone by a struggling Villarreal outfit. It may not be a polished performance given international fatigue and several injury absences, but Los Blancos should get the job done at the Bernabéu.

Several of Mourinho's key players enjoyed productive international breaks and will be eager to carry that momentum back into domestic competition. Jude Bellingham is undeniably back to his sharpest, Marc Cucurella was outstanding for Spain, and Arda Güler impressed despite Türkiye's difficulties.

Then there are the likes of Kylian Mbappé and Vinícius Júnior, both of whom will be hungry to return to action after a frustrating three weeks away. The star-studded white shirts should prove too much for a Villarreal side still searching for its identity.

Prediction: Real Madrid 2–1 Villarreal

Real Madrid Predicted Lineup vs. Villarreal

Real Madrid predicted XI

Real Madrid came through the international break largely unscathed. Both Mbappé and Ibrahima Konaté avoided serious problems, returned to training, and are available for selection.

Nevertheless, Mourinho may be tempted to keep Konaté on the bench with one eye on the club's Champions League fixture against Roma on Wednesday. Dean Huijsen will also be absent through suspension following his red card against Atlético Madrid in their last outing.

With the injured Éder Militão and Raúl Asencio also unavailable, Aurélien Tchouaméni could once again fill in as an emergency center back. Eduardo Camavinga could then slot into midfield alongside Bernardo Silva while Federico Valverde continues his recovery from an ankle injury.

Rodrygo and Ferland Mendy are gradually working their way back to fitness, but both still have considerable ground to cover before rejoining Mourinho's squad.

Real Madrid predicted lineup vs. Villarreal (4-2-3-1): Courtois; Dumfries, Tchouaméni, Rüdiger, Cucurella; Silva, Camavinga; Güler, Bellingham, Vinícius Jr; Mbappé.

Villarreal Predicted Lineup vs. Real Madrid

Alex Freeman

In contrast to Mourinho's lengthy injury list, Villarreal head into Saturday's match in relatively good health. Only Tajon Buchanan is confirmed out with a hamstring problem.

Iñigo Pérez must determine who fills the Canadian's role. Nicolas Pépé will be hoping for the nod after being left out of the starting eleven in the team's final two matches before the break. Alberto Moleiro could also move to the left, though following his excellent performance as the team's No. 10 last time out, he is expected to keep his spot.

Santi Comesaña is also set to feature from the start after recovering from the ankle injury that kept him out of Villarreal's victory over Levante.

Santiago Mouriño is pushing for a starting berth at right back, but Alex Freeman is coming off an impressive international break with the U.S. men's national team. The American is expected to hold his place on the right flank, where his pace will prove useful against Vinícius Jr.

Villarreal predicted lineup vs. Real Madrid (4-2-3-1): Gulácsi; Freeman, Navarro, Veiga, Cardona; Gueye, Comesaña; Akhomach, Moleiro, Pepe; Pérez.
