Real Madrid Finally Cuts Ties with €30 Million Flop After Five-Year Nightmare

Following an unsuccessful period at Real Madrid, the previously promising Reinier Jesús is reportedly departing the club to join Atlético Mineiro in Brazil.

In 2020, Real Madrid swiftly secured what they considered to be Brazil's next rising star. The Spanish giants outmaneuvered Manchester City to obtain Reinier's services, bringing the young talent to Madrid in a €30 million ($33 million) transfer from Flamengo.

Five years later, Reinier has yet to feature for Real Madrid's senior squad. The Brazilian, who failed to impress during loan spells at multiple European clubs since his arrival, is now poised to return to Brazil to revitalize his struggling career.

MARCA reports that Reinier has reached an agreement for a permanent move to Atlético Mineiro. The Brazilian club viewed the 23-year-old as an "attractive prospect" and believes that with proper support, Reinier can rediscover the talent that initially brought him to Europe.

Rebuilding his confidence after his Spanish experience will be challenging for Reinier. He had initially hoped to emulate the success of his Brazilian compatriots Vinícius Júnior and Rodrygo.

Vinícius Júnior secured a €45 million ($52.2 million) move from Flamengo in 2017, while Real Madrid acquired Rodrygo the following year in a €40 million ($46.4 million) deal from Santos.

While both attackers progressed through the academy and became global stars at the world's most prestigious club, Reinier's trajectory went in the opposite direction. The Brazilian managed just three appearances for Real Madrid Castilla before loan moves to Borussia Dortmund, Girona, Frosinone and Granada.

He failed to make an impact at any destination, frequently struggling for regular playing time with underperforming sides.

The five-year chapter appears to be concluding, enabling both Reinier and Real Madrid to put behind them what stands as one of the club's most disappointing signings in recent years.
