Following a prolonged negotiation process, Real Madrid have reportedly struck a deal worth as much as €140 million ($161.6 million) with RB Leipzig for Yan Diomande.
The 19-year-old winger, who had also attracted interest from Paris Saint-Germain and Liverpool, is poised to become the most expensive signing in Real Madrid's history, eclipsing the record previously set by Jude Bellingham.
The Athletic reports the transfer is structured at a base fee of €125 million ($144.3 million), with an additional €15 million ($17.3 million) in potential add-ons. Leganés, Diomande's previous club, is entitled to a portion of the transfer fee in accordance with their original arrangement with Leipzig.
Diomande has now been cleared to travel to Madrid for his medical examination after extended talks between the two clubs. The green light to make the trip came just hours after Leipzig confirmed their young star had returned to training on Wednesday.
Real Madrid Ready to Risk it All for Diomande
Committing such an enormous sum for a largely untested player is a daring gamble from a Real Madrid side hungry for trophies after going two consecutive seasons without a major title. Throughout that period, the right wing has been a persistent weakness — one that José Mourinho now expects Diomande to address.
There is little question the teenager possesses blistering pace, silky technical ability, and dribbling skills that would draw admiration from even Vinícius Júnior. Diomande also brings a commendable work ethic to the table, a quality that has been noticeably absent among the forwards currently occupying Mourinho's attack.
In his first season at Leipzig, Diomande contributed 13 goals and nine assists across 36 appearances. He then went on to represent Côte d'Ivoire at this summer's World Cup, starting all four of his nation's games and chipping in with an assist along the way.
However, given his young age and lack of experience at an elite club, Diomande undoubtedly represents a gamble for Los Blancos. The hefty investment in Bellingham paid off handsomely, but more recent acquisitions of young talent have yielded far less impressive results.
In the past season alone, Endrick was sent out on loan to Lyon, Franco Mastantuono barely featured despite costing €63.2 million ($72.8 million), Dean Huijsen endured a difficult campaign, and Álvaro Carreras found himself on the bench during the second half of 2025-26.
The growing list of young players who have failed to deliver at the Bernabéu is considerable, and Diomande will be eager to avoid a similar trajectory — particularly given the relentless effort Real Madrid put into securing his services.
Dimoande Joins an Evolving Real Madrid Squad
Mourinho has already brought in Bernardo Silva, Ibrahima Konaté, Denzel Dumfries, Marc Cucurella, and Carlos Espí to the club this summer, with Diomande now set to become the new head coach's sixth acquisition.
Los Blancos are also said to be pursuing Manchester City midfielder Rodri in a bid to finally address the void left by Toni Kroos' departure two seasons ago.
After a couple of relatively subdued transfer windows, Real Madrid are showing no reluctance in spending heavily to rebuild what became a fractured squad last season. The dressing room clash between Federico Valverde and Aurélien Tchouaméni was just one of several issues that surfaced behind closed doors at the world's most storied club.
The 15-time European champions are looking to turn over a new leaf in 2026–27, but patience is a rare commodity at the Bernabéu. Diomande and his fellow new arrivals will need to make an immediate impact, or risk being met with jeers from their new home supporters.
