Yan Diomande is now reportedly "open" to a move to Real Madrid, adding a fresh dimension to the ongoing summer transfer saga surrounding the RB Leipzig winger.
Diomande has attracted interest from numerous clubs following a standout 2025–26 campaign, with his options seemingly narrowed down to Paris Saint-Germain or Liverpool — until Real Madrid abruptly entered the picture.
Reports surfaced on Friday of an approach from Los Blancos that Leipzig promptly turned down. The bid was said to be valued at up to €100 million ($115 million), with €90 million guaranteed. However, the Bundesliga outfit are holding out for a larger fee.
Real Madrid are pursuing both angles, as Fabrizio Romano reported on Saturday morning that preliminary contract discussions with Diomande have gone "positive."
The 15-time European champions' next move will be to submit an enhanced offer surpassing the initial €100 million proposal.
Why Do Clubs Want to Sign Yan Diomande?
Diomande's appeal is undeniable. Last season marked his first complete year as a professional at senior level — he only made his debut for Leganés back in March 2025 — yet he wrapped it up with 21 combined goals and assists for the Bundesliga's third-placed side. He won't celebrate his 20th birthday until November.
Diomande is capable of playing on either flank, beginning last season on Leipzig's left side before shifting to the right for a considerable stretch of the campaign. His 2026 World Cup stint with Côte d'Ivoire didn't produce the same output, but he impressed during the group stage, generating 10 chances — translating to just one assist — across those three games alone.
It showed that Diomande can excel beyond the familiar environment he's established at Leipzig. While he has yet to be truly tested at the elite level beyond a single season, his raw talent is evident and carries an enormous ceiling for him to develop into a dual-threat superstar.
Liverpool still have a Mohamed Salah-shaped void on their right wing to address. Truly replacing Salah is an impossible task, and the club may well restructure their attacking approach this season. Nevertheless, the Reds are in need of a winger, and Diomande stands out as the top prospect available.
At Madrid, Rodrygo's injury-enforced absence until 2027 compounds the uncertainty hanging over Vinícius Júnior, who is entering the final year of his deal with no extension on the horizon. Even if Viní Jr. remains, the squad is thin in wide areas, making Diomande an attractive long-term acquisition.
For PSG, the motivation is somewhat different. Their pursuit of Diomande is less about plugging a specific gap and more about assembling a roster packed with elite talent to sustain their dominance in the Champions League following back-to-back triumphs.
Which Club Should Yan Diomande Join?
What we already knew was that Diomande's reported preference leaned toward PSG over Liverpool — before Real Madrid's offer changed the landscape.
PSG are the back-to-back reigning European champions, and joining them would mean linking up with a collection of world-class attackers — even without a guaranteed starting role. It's a risk on his part, given that Bradley Barcola is already being squeezed out by the stranglehold Khvicha Kvaratskhelia and Désiré Doué have on the starting positions. It's also a path that derailed Hugo Ekitiké's career at a comparable stage. Doué, however, represents the opposite outcome.
In terms of lifestyle, Paris holds greater appeal than Liverpool, and it wouldn't be the first time the Reds have missed out on a target for that very reason — just ask Alexis Sánchez.
Liverpool does present its own upside, albeit as a significant gamble for different reasons. The Reds endured a difficult 2025–26 season and are now rebuilding under new head coach Andoni Iraola. Diomande could come in from the start and take on an immediate starring role, though it carries far greater risk than joining a squad already built to compete at the highest level.

There is also the weight of a nine-figure price tag and the expectation of being branded Salah's replacement.
Real Madrid may not be operating at the same heights as two years ago, but they likely represent the middle ground for Diomande, sitting between Liverpool and PSG. There is a clearer pathway into the team than at Paris, while the gap back to the summit is arguably shorter in Madrid.
