Real Madrid Shatters Own Contract Rules to Secure Star Player's Extension

Real Madrid have reportedly secured a contract extension with goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois, keeping him at the Santiago Bernabéu through 2027.

With Courtois entering his final year under his existing agreement, there had been summer speculation that Los Blancos might begin succession planning with a potential pursuit of Joan García, who eventually moved from Espanyol to Barcelona.

However, dismissing such rumors, Madrid have demonstrated their faith in Courtois by finalizing a fresh deal with the Belgian shot-stopper which, per MARCA, extends for an additional two campaigns.

The club typically follows a policy where players beyond 32 receive only single-year extensions, usually negotiated during the latter stages of their expiring contracts, similar to Luka Modrić's situation in previous seasons.

Nevertheless, although Courtois's extension adds just one more year, the timing of reaching this agreement so early in the season represents an unusual approach for Madrid and signals strong backing for the Belgian keeper.

Courtois, who celebrated his 33rd birthday in May, continues to rank among the globe's elite goalkeepers and maintains the confidence of Madrid hierarchy, while incoming coach Xabi Alonso reportedly welcomes the opportunity to keep working with the imposing goalkeeper.

Having resolved this contract situation early, Madrid can now turn their attention to several other agreements set to expire following the upcoming season.

David Alaba, Antonio Rüdiger and Dani Carvajal each have 12 months remaining on their current terms. All three players exceed the 32-year threshold, suggesting their negotiations might extend well into the 2025–26 season.

Meanwhile, 22-year-old defender Raúl Asencio has allegedly finalized a new five-year deal, though official club confirmation remains pending.
