Real Madrid Stands Firm on Vinicius Junior's Future Despite Growing Fan Revolt
Xabi Alonso's unexpected exit has reportedly removed a significant "barrier" that was blocking Real Madrid's contract discussions with star winger Vinicius Junior, leading the club to resume negotiations ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Although contract extension talks with the Brazilian began last January, minimal advancement has occurred between both sides twelve months later. Vinicius Jr, whose existing agreement with Los Blancos concludes in June 2027, is believed to be demanding a unprecedented €30 million ($34.6 million) annually, an amount the organization appears reluctant to provide.
Discussions deteriorated further as the 2025–26 campaign commenced. Sources indicated the No. 7 declined to sign fresh terms while his connection with former coach Alonso remained severely damaged; they experienced a public dispute after Vinicius Jr was withdrawn during the season's opening El Clásico.

Per ESPN, the likelihood of contract extension for the Brazil star was "completely absent" while Alonso held the position. The Spanish manager represented a "detrimental element" in discussions due to his tactical choices that frequently resulted in Vinicius Jr being removed from matches or beginning them as a substitute.
Following Real Madrid's decision to part ways with the coach after merely 34 matches, there is allegedly renewed optimism regarding the stagnant negotiations. The organization is anticipated to restart discussions before Vinicius Jr reaches his contract's final year.

Wage Disputes Remain an Obstacle in Vinicius Jr's Contract Discussions

Despite Alonso's departure, one substantial issue continues to block a fresh agreement for Vinicius Jr: his financial expectations. The 25-year-old presently receives approximately €17 million ($19.75 million) annually.
ESPN indicates Real Madrid proposed increasing Vinicius Jr's wages to €20 million ($23.2 million) in May, but witnessed their suggested compensation rejected by the player's representatives, who sought an additional €10 million ($11.6 million) in performance incentives.
Vinicius Jr, however, has not strengthened his position for obtaining the landmark contract. The 2024 Ballon d'Or second-place finisher has netted only six goals across 29 matches this campaign, and has frequently faced criticism from supporters at the Santiago Bernabéu.
New manager Álvaro Arbeloa completely supports the two-time Champions League champion, nevertheless, and has consistently expressed that restoring Vinicius Jr to peak performance remains among his primary objectives.
