Real Madrid Star Faces Heat as Neymar's Legendary Brazil Jersey Number Looms Large
While Neymar remains absent from the Brazil national squad, the iconic No. 10 jersey has been passed to Rodrygo, who acknowledges the responsibility brings "significant pressure."
The Seleção return to international duty this October break, facing South Korea and Japan in friendly matches after securing their spot in the 2026 World Cup.
Neymar hasn't received a selection under new manager Carlo Ancelotti as the Brazilian forward continues recovering from persistent injury setbacks, making his famous number available. With Raphinha sidelined through injury, the jersey now rests with Rodrygo, a responsibility the Real Madrid winger takes seriously.
"There's significant pressure given the legends who've donned this jersey. I'm still at the beginning of my journey," Rodrygo told AS in a recent interview.
Previous holders of Brazil's No. 10 jersey include Neymar, Pelé, Zico and Ronaldinho, representing some of the finest talents to play for the Seleção. While Rodrygo joins distinguished company, the jersey's significance isn't unfamiliar to the 24-year-old, having worn it several times across the past two seasons.
"I consistently emphasize that this jersey remains Neymar's. I've worn it due to his fitness issues. However, in matches where I must play with number 10, or any number assigned, I'm prepared to deliver my utmost for Brazil," Rodrygo explained.
Rodrygo Seeks to Impress Carlo Ancelotti Again

Rodrygo returns to Brazil duty after a seven-month absence. The winger missed Carlo Ancelotti's previous two squads, with the new manager emphasizing that there are "no guaranteed selections" and each player must earn their national team position.
These omissions occurred during Rodrygo's challenging period at Real Madrid, though the Brazilian has shown improved form under Xabi Alonso in 2025–26, battling Vinícius Júnior for left-wing opportunities. Now, Rodrygo must demonstrate to Ancelotti that he merits a return to the starting lineup before the 2026 World Cup.
The Seleção have failed to match their historical standards in recent tournaments, something Rodrygo hopes to help Ancelotti address as they prepare for next summer's competition.
"We're five-time world champions, despite our underwhelming performances in recent years," Rodrygo stated. "You can always aspire [to win the 2026 World Cup] because we possess exceptional players competing for elite clubs worldwide.
"We're lacking something minor to achieve complete unity and ensure everything functions smoothly on the pitch. Things will improve under our coach, and I'm optimistic we'll be significantly stronger by the World Cup to challenge for the championship."
